I should hope I'm no less welcome as a consequence of being unexpected. You've had at least enough time here to compose a list. Could you say how long, precisely?
[Their surroundings are far from a nightmare. Once she absorbs that, it should lend some credence to the alternate theories.]
I'm perfectly willing to allow for other possibilities, but there's something to be said for Occam's razor.
but can you do the dance of honor? brb stalking you. <3verybritishJuly 9 2010, 15:32:13 UTC
Caroline?
[She's basing that assessment mostly on appearance and partly on manner. Once upon a time, dealing with Caroline's ilk was a nightmare for Adelle, but there are larger thorns in her side. If this is someone's idea of an appropriate psychological torment, it's slightly out-of-date.]
I was thinking something along the lines of an engineered mental state: the involuntary kind. If it were something less elaborate, like being held for ransom in an exotic holiday destination, I suspect I would have noticed being transported.

[That answer doesn't seem to surprise her, not even by virtue of being unexpected. Adelle ventured to predict Caroline, she'll gladly accept someone else. She can justify it without any alteration to her perception of reality. This will become less tenable for her, somewhere down the line. She's not going to bum a cigarette. If it arises naturally in conversation, she might ask where the nearest bar is; or indeed if one exists. Incidentally, she thought she was being more specific.]
In the event that I do figure it out, it's abundantly clear that I don't know who to get back to.
