When we practiced the emergency swimming ascent during our pool sessions, I was actually negatively bouyant when I started the ascent. I kept exhaling, like I should have, but must have been a bit overeager with it, because I was just about to the surface when I ran out of air to exhale. Which also meant that my lungs were uninflated, and I was no longer able to swim upwards. I actually started sinking. I think in open water, I would have had to have ditched my weights to make it to the surface.

If you feel any better about it, we were probably overweighted at the time, so establishing neutral buoyancy was already more of a challenge out of the gate.
