Nightshade Free

Jun 19, 2008 08:00

After yet another attack, I find myself wanting support from others like me. Sadly, when I typed "nightshade free" and "nightshade-free" into the search here at LJ, there was NO ONE with that interest. For "nightshades" I got 8 people.

But! I wonder if they are out there? Just in hiding? Maybe struggling? I don't know. So I made a community:

I just listened to a "Fresh Air" podcast on the way to work that included an interview with an allergy specialist talking about food allergies and, briefly, food sensitivities. He said such things are DEFINITELY on the rise, for many reasons. (The hypothesis that seems to have the most traction is the idea that our immune systems aren't getting as much of a challenge during its transformative period, causing it to be more likely to misfire and cause allergic reactions.) (It's currently the most recent podcast episode with a fun interview with Mike Meyers, too, if you want to listen.)

So it's entirely possible that in the same way that gluten allergy/sensitivity has gotten a surge in attention and recognition in the last few years, nightshade sensitivity might, too.

Thanks for the rec (and the support! :) I'm downloading right now!

Maybe I could call the blog "Daylight - a nightshade free blog" .

I only have a problem with tomatoes. Do I qualify? I believe that ratatosk has a problem with all nightshades... actually, yeah, he's the only person on LJ with the interest "nightshade allergies". I will notify him of the existance of your comm. And you might add "nightshade allergies" as an interest :)

Sure, you qualify. Why not?

Great! Thanks!

Oh, I dunno, 'cause I eat lots of potatoes and peppers? Ok, I'll join :)

Also, it's weird, I realized that "nightshade allergies" is also listed on your community but it still doesn't show up highlighted even though when I search for it I get you and your comm and ratatosk. I wonder if they changed the way interests get highlighted or something.

I'll add the vegetables that make up the list to the interests. Tomato, eggplant, pepper & potatoes.

You may want to add interests like the large family of immune disorders such as Lupus, RA, MS, and Fibro. Most people who suffer from these conditions have a nightshade aversion since it causes inflammation and worsens their chronic pain. I have Lupus and it took me a couple of years to make the connection. When I finally inquired with my doctor, he was "yeah, nightshades increase or swelling and pain." Thanks for the info up front, buddy.

Would it be OK for me to join to get some ideas for how to help d_h, who is tomato-free but okay with small amounts of other nightshades, like potatoes?
