I know a lot of people who said that the video for Hungry Like the Wolf (Duran Duran) played into notions of the Savage Negro, and therefore was racist ( Read more... )

Wow. I was 12 and never thought of the racial subtext. I was more in awe of the moans at the end of the song.

Sigh. They don't make video like they used to. And they cost a bajillion dollars more now. You kids get off my lawn.

Wow. I was just about to post a comment with those exact two thoughts. :) When I first started getting into making video things in high school, the first place I went was music video. (I still have a tape of a music video I submitted to the Presidential arts contest, whatever it was called.) Now, it would be almost as expensive for me to make the kinds of music videos I'd like to make as it would be to finish making my feature film.

To me I just saw a hot chick. One who was strong and Fierce. I never saw color. To me she was a woman. Her skin color was irrelevant to me as it was about strength and sexuality.

It hink this is a case of you get out wht you put in. People se more of what they want to see and less of what the intent was. I feel the early Music videos were just simple statments. They were nt rying to make groundbreaking stements.

Anywho... It was hott!

Heh. I wonder if you can make a case that the people who think this video is racist are racist. :) I'm the same way, the woman's skin color never even occurred to me until nex0s posted this.

I'm also having very cynical thoughts about those who think the video is racist actually revealing a hidden fear because the woman is wild and untamed, and that's SKEERY and they want their women, especially ones with dark skin, tamed and manageable. Or something. It's a very unformed thought at the moment. :)
