NJ to NY

I recall reading in the past on taking the Airtrain from Newark to Penn Station.
I heard there's a 'tourist' rate of $12, but also a cheaper/sneakier way to ride it for less money.

Can anyone remind me?
Thanks.

IIRC, you catch the NJ Transit train to Newark at Penn Station, and then there's a free transfer from that to the AirTrain at the airport. (I did this last summer. I think the trick is to not pay again when you transfer trains, because your ticket is good for both.)

The plane is landing at Newark and I want to get to Penn Stn the cheapest way possible. I thought it was $5 or so.

I wonder how long this route takes.

There's a train right from EWR (newark) directly to Penn Stn, right?

I don't remember how much it cost. I want to say the price is closer to $10, but that info is probably on the NJ Transit site.

You have to take the AirTrain from the terminal to the Newark Airport train station. There is then a train directly from there to Penn Station. It's a short ride, less than 20 mins, I think.

Well, the Airtrain itself goes from Newark airport to Newark airport train station (only NJ Transit and Amtrak stop there) and then from that station NJ Transit or Amtrak train goes to Penn Station. I paid ~15$ for the whole ride and I don't think there's cheaper option ;( Unless you wanna take PATH to Jersey and then a bus to the airport..

That's what I'm saying - you actually need to take TWO trains - first is AirTrain from the EWR to the train station and then NJ Transit train from there (cheaper than Amtrak). The whole trip would take hour and a half and would cost like $15.

The other way is to take a direct bus from EWR to Penn station. The same thing here - ~$15 & 1.5h (might actually be longer/shorter depending on traffic).

Basically, that's it. That's why I don't like flying from EWR - too expensive to get to/from..

I found this really good site (http://www.nysubway.com/airport/newark.html. It gives a detailed comparison of all the different ways to get to Newark from NYC by cost, travel time, dependability.

I'm going to the Newark airport in two days and was researching ways to do it. In the end I chose to take the Newark express bus for $25 roundtrip w/ a travel time of about 45 minutes.
