Late Night Travel

Shot in the dark: Say you're flying into Newark around midnight. You've got a couple piece of large, heavy luggage and no one to meet you at the airport. Would you get a car through the travel service that helped you book the flight or would you just take a taxi ( Read more... )

I'd comparison-shop the two, but if you're talking about renting a car I wouldn't do it. Too much hassle unless you're planning to use it a lot besides the trip from the airport. But shop around. When I got a car service from Newark to Brooklyn, the range quoted was from $75-$125 - I was definitely glad I shopped around. All told with tip the one I did was $80-something. Worth it because I was sick, and it was really late at night, so I didn't want to deal with public transit like I'd originally planned to.

And just so you know you don't need to line up car service sooo far in advance. I called right before I got on my flight, realizing that I was going to be feeling too badly to do the transit thing on the other end, and it worked out OK.

Care to hazard a guess as to how much a taxi would cost? Mapquest says it's 22.3 miles and 40 minutes (but sometimes Mapquest is on crack).

I'm not going to rent a car, not just for the night. Thanks for the tip on calling around.

hopstop.com should be able to give you a taxi estimate. don't know how accurate, since i almost never take cabs. :)

I just spoke to arthurq, his car service charges 55 + the 19 tolls from Brooklyn so to Queens your probably looking at 65-75

Car service definitely IMO. Woodside isn't thaaaat far into queens, but it would be a pricey cab ride, and for that kind of money I'd rather sit in a nice car.

Seconded. I know into Manhattan it's the metered rate and it runs about $60. Queens is a flat rate, but I don't know how much it is. I'd venture a lot. Crossing state lines in cabs is tricky. They generally have to charge you double because they can't legally pick up a fare on their way back. SUCKS. Go for a car service. I use Carmel. Into Manhattan from Newark is like $50. Queens can't be much more.

you could take a super shuttle (shared van service from the airport to your doorstep). From Newark it should be around 45 dollars but you can get a fare quote from the website. I only used it going to JFK in the middle of the day but from that experience I would definitely use it again.

another option that hasn't been mentioned yet... NJ transit > penn station > LIRR port washington line to woodside?
