Hello all-
When I worked downtown, every morning I went to
Cafe Gusto and chatted the guys behind the counter while they made me an amazing bagel (pumpernickle, scooped out and toasted with low fat cream cheese that had sun-dried tomatoes and fresh basil mixed in.) Those morning bagels got me through six months of really, really hating my job.
Well, I finally quit, and now I work at 38th and 5th and I've tried so many different delis, Pax Wholesome Foods, even Dunkin' Donuts (gross) to find my morning bagel and so far? Nada. Pax came closest, since they have low fat cream cheese, but their bagel selection was pretty lame and even though they toasted it (for, like, 3 seconds) the bagel was almost instantly cold.
Fellow NYers - best bagel in the Bryant Park/Herald Square/Grand Central area? I'm not above changing which train I take in the mornings if I can end up with a bagel that makes temping seem not so bad. Bonus points for friendly staff who don't give me the hairy eyeball for requesting scooped out.
Also, since I am temping and end up in a wide variety of places here in the city, I welcome recommendations for the best morning bagels in Manhattan generally!
Thanks!
