Haunted City: The most terrifying events in the city's history.
What are the most terrifying events in New York's history? Here are the three events I thought of first. What events in the past to you find most shocking and tragic?
July 1640 Governor Kieft, Of New Amsterdam calls for the eradication of the Lenape Indians who are suspected of poaching Dutch pigs. Hundreds of indians are killed notable warriors are decapitated and burned alive on the commons where city hall now stands.
July 11-13th 1863, when impoverished Irish immigrants are told they may be drafted to fight for the freedom of Negroes and the business interests of wealthy northern liberals. In response, they roam the city in gangs terrorizing Blacks, Federal troops and wealthy abolitionists. More than 100 people were killed by the mobs.
On March 25, 1911 a fire broke out in the the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory near 14th Street Union Square. 146 Garment workers were burned alive or jumped to their death.
***I'm leaving out the events of 2001 as, those wounds are still open and for many it is hardly "history" yet.
