Mac had been grabbing a coffee a block away when he got the call. Cutting through the alleyway, he hadn't expected to witness an officer lose her breakfast. But, Mac was also cool under pressure. He wasn't judgmental. If he did think anything of it, he didn't show it.

"Summers," he said, deciding not to mention what he'd just witnessed. He followed her back to the crime scene. Taking it in, he took it all in. "What do we got?"

"Eight year-old girl. From what I can see, she was strangled, but the signature is pretty distinctive."

She pushed open the door to the room, and spread out on the bed was the small body of the dead girl. Around her neck was wrapped a bright red scarf, meant to cover the ligature marks from the strangulation. Buffy had seen it before, on a mob hit when she first started walking the beat, but she'd never seen it on a child like that.

"Her name's Valerie Evans. Mom's a work; the nanny was the one who found her."

"Mom on her way?" he asked, surveying the scene. He spotted the scarf and knew something was familiar but he didn't know exactly what it was. Buffy would have to fill him in. "Is that her scarf?"

She shook her head. "Detective Messer is on his way to inform her. We figured that she didn't need to see her like this."

She took a breath, before shaking her head. "It's possible, but I don't think it is. I've seen something like this before. But I could just be ... jumping to conclusions."

That would be why she can't work at the crime lab.
