Wow, that's quite a ways back to trace! And that's sad, about him never having met his son, or the son his father. At least with military service there's more likely to be a paper trail to follow.

What a find! Looking into my family history is something I keep meaning to do, but I haven't started yet. It sounds like you know quite a lot about your family. I'm jealous!

I hope you find lots of interesting history when you do start! :) It can be really fascinating! I know about my dad's side because of his mother's decades of hard work and the time/effort of many others. I can't even take "credit" for what I've "found" -- the info was out there and it's just a matter of connecting A to B to C in a relative way. (badum-bum! ;)
