Title: Play Me a Tune; I'll Sing You a Song
Rating: NC-17
Pairing: RyoMassu
Warnings: One really short sex scene (sort of)
Summary: Life is just a series of moments; These are the moments that snowballed into something that makes life worth living. (Or the evolution of RyoMassu)
Notes: zheinpathos I really hope you enjoy this. Much thanks to my beta :D

Massu likes the colour yellow. It's sunny, eye catching and happy, and reminds him of the place he has among the members of News. He doesn't remember being allocated the colour. He doesn't remember any of them having any say about what colour would represent each of the members. But however it had come about Massu had been happy with being the yellow member.

The colour begins to define things that are 'his'. His toothbrush, the shoes that he just had to buy, his favourite belt, even his daily planner is yellow. So it stands to reason that he's drawn to the colour. He enjoys sunny days more and tends to buys brands with yellow packaging. He tells himself that it's this same reason that draws his eye to Ryo whenever Kanjani8 appears in his view. It's only natural that he would notice the yellow ranger and the sunny smile that seems to affect him more when he's with his Kansai counterparts.

But Massu starts to wonder if it's quite so natural when he starts to think of Ryo as 'his' just because he is yellow too. After all, Ryo is blue when he's in Tokyo. And that says it all really. Massu wants the happy, relaxed, sunny man that is the yellow ranger. The sombre blue News member is far less eye catching to Massu.

When he comes to realise this, Massu ignores the emotional aspect of his thoughts in preference for searching for ways to bring that sunny smile back to Ryo's face whenever they're together.

...

They're all singers, obviously, but when it came to Masuda it was a little more obvious than with the others. He sang all the time. In the shower, while doing his hair, while muscle training. He even hummed while memorising scripts. He was born to sing. Which was fine ... except that Ryo liked to play guitar. He did it whenever he got a spare moment. Because where Massu was born to sing, Ryo was born to make music.

It hadn't really crossed Ryo's mind when News had first formed. He'd never considered the others in the room when he picked up his guitar so he didn't really notice the way Massu would intentionally clam up, holding himself back so as not to clash with his sempai's music.

But as the years wore on and Massu became more comfortable with his role in the group, Ryo became more aware because now, instead of staying quiet, Massu sang along. Singing the lyrics to the songs he recognised and humming along to the tunes that were unfamiliar to him whenever Ryo played. Pitch perfect every time.

Eventually it got to the point where Ryo would deliberately play newly written music around Massu just to get his input on the melody to use for the lyrics. He never actually asked for help, but Massu noticed just the same. And with the realisation came a quiet sense of pride to the younger man's aura.

...

Massu dislikes it when the media makes a fuss over Ryo's schedule. Not because he dislikes the attention given to his bandmate or anything like that. He dislikes it because they are, for the most part, wrong. Ryo is not overworked or disastrously tired. Yes there were twice as many songs to learn, twice as many dance moves and twice as many interviews but management made sure he had the time to take it all on. There was no point to letting one of their brightest stars burn out.

The look that others mistook for exhaustion was actually Ryo's bare faced open vulnerability. He was a shy guy who had never really learnt to put himself out there or be comfortable in his own skin. He was always either covering his embarrassment with his outlandish Kansai character or hiding in the background hoping no one would notice him. Massu couldn't help but find it adorable and just a little bit sad.

He wanted so much to tell Ryo that it was okay to be himself. To have fun without pushing the boundaries or getting awkward when the joke was over. That it was okay for people to see him for who he was. But the one time he had tried, Ryo had called him a hypocrite. Apparently Ryo had noticed just how much Massu hid of himself when he was in public too. Still, Massu couldn't help but think that there was a difference in keeping parts of yourself hidden from the media and keeping who you really are hidden from everyone.
...

Ryo hasn't got the kind of schedule that allowed for regular activities, so he's never gotten into sport too much. Because of that he's never had anything that might be considered 'large' when it came to muscles. He knows Pi's muscles are impressive, but Ryo can't help but feel like they're a lie. Building up muscle purely to have muscle seems too much like the natural alternative to implants - they're just there to look good. When Ryo thinks of what an impressive body is, he thinks of Massu.

What Massu has is there for a purpose. His shoulders are broad, his biceps gorgeous and his chest is sort of breathtaking. But it's not there just to entertain the fans; it's there because he's a swimmer.

Ryo grew up in an area that saw him spending more than a few childhood summers at the beach and inevitably his spindly little legs had been overpowered by rips and over strong currents on several occasions. He'd had more than a few reasons to be grateful for the strong swimmers that manned the lifeguard stations. So to Ryo's appreciation of Massu's body is not entirely unexpected.

The depth of the appreciation though, that is something that others might not expect. Because to Ryo, Massu's body isn't just about his physical self; it's an example of who Massu is as a person. All that effort and training and time he puts in for a result that is better than anyone expects and yet he doesn't flaunt it or ask for praise. There is a quiet pride from it but he's still humble and slightly embarrassed if anyone compliments him on it. In Ryo's opinion that is more than just attractive; it's hot.

...

It's not the first time that they've shared a room during a tour - it's probably closer to the twentieth time - but it is the first time that Massu realises how much he appreciates Ryo as a roommate. Maybe it's that Ryo never leaves a mess all over the floor or water all over the bathroom. Maybe it's that he doesn't want to talk when Massu wants to sleep. Or maybe it's the way he always forgets to unpack his conditioner for his morning shower and comes rushing out of the shower wearing nothing but a loose towel as he fishes the little white bottle out of his bag.

Though, really, it's probably the way Ryo's eyes lock onto Massu's with a nervous invitation before he disappears back into the bathroom, not bothering to close the door. For weeks now there have been looks passed across rooms, hands brushing together and a thousand other little signals that could have meant nothing but obviously meant more than either of the shy boys had the courage to say directly.

He's not sure where the courage comes from but Massu finds himself following Ryo into the bathroom and offering to wash his hair. To Ryo's credit he barely bats an eye as he smiles slightly and hands over the conditioner before hanging his towel back up and letting Massu have free reign over his scalp.

...

Ryo kneels on the carpet, looking up at Massu's chest as it glows in the moonlight. A thrill rushes over his skin at the grin he's awarded with. There is something so so right about Massu taking charge. His directions are clear but not cruel. Ryo can't believe his luck to have found a man so willing to be in control but not sadistic.

He does as he's told, carefully learning new techniques as Massu directs him until both are clinging to the edge of a euphoric edifice.

Ryo catches his breath as Massu looks down at him smiling proud and lustful. He'd never enjoyed looking after a kouhai so much before.

"Can I?"

Massu’s hand comes down to stroke Ryo’s cheek and guide him forward onto his cock.

"You can do anything you want, you've earned it." Massu purrs and Ryo makes a happy sound that he knows would reverberate through his lover's flesh.

...

Their relationship had evolved slowly over the years. It had taken time and trust and changing perspectives. But in the end all it came down to was chemistry, an appreciation for staying in on a Saturday night and a strange enjoyment of doing the laundry together on a Wednesday evening.

The strongest factor, though, came from them finally letting each other see who they really were. They were most comfortable when they were together, hanging out on Sunday mornings as Ryo played guitar on his yellow lounge and Massu sat next to him flicking through magazines and singing along.
