History: Matt is an orphan who grew up in a prestigious orphanage. Wammy's House was an orphanage/school that was dedicated to raising geniuses. Matt was one of those kids. He became quiet and withdrawn, after losing his parents. It wasn't until he met Mello that he was pulled out of his shell and learned how to become a happy go lucky kid again.
Now, Matt is 19. It has been five years since he last saw Mello. He's currently still searching for his partner, but with the current situations in New Sancum, he has to constantly change his cover so he isn't caught. He uses an alias to stay in the clear, but with very little to his name, he often finds himself out on the streets. Maybe one day he will fin Mello again, and they can work together to make a difference here.
Personality: There is very little known canon to Matt's personality, but he is portrayed as a laid back, fun-loving guy. He's generally lazy and hates going outdoors, but both traits can be pushed aside as long as Mello is involved, because to Matt, his best friend pretty much makes anything fun. He loves games, and can play them for hours on end if he chooses. cigarettes are his guilty pleasure and he usually smokes at least two packs a day. He'd rather die young than to live his life fearing what can harm him. (Though that doesn't stop him from being scared on plenty of occasions.) He can be flirtatious and he's got a certain 'nice guy' charm that most ladies can't resist. Hell, he can even get under Mello's skin with his charm.
He can be a nice guy, but he doesn't trust people easily. That doesn't keep him from making good acquaintances though. He also likes to play by his own rules. The only person he really would follow is Mello. He'd do anything for Mello, even die for him.
He's also got a talent with electronics, and can be really smart when he chooses to be. He's what people called a lazy genius. He could have done so much better in life if he would have applied himself better.

In Canon: (it's not completely canon, because... well Matt only showed up in 10 panels of the manga...) Mello called him. After five years, Mello finally called Matt for his help. On one hand, Matt was ecstatic to know Mello was still alive and that those years of fruitless search weren't really wasted. On the other he was worried, and still extremely hurt by Mello's leaving without a word when they were younger. Still, that didn't stop him from driving nonstop from his place in New York, all the way to Los Angeles to go to Mello's aid.
When he arrived, Mello was on the verge of death. He spent the next two months helping Mello recuperate and form a plan to capture Kira. Finally, just several days before his twentieth birthday, Matt agreed to help Mello execute his plan to kidnap Kira's spokeswoman, Takada Kiyome. Mello assured him he'd only be questioned, and Matt wanted to believe him, but they both knew they wouldn't come out of it alive.
