George, though she appears like
this to anyone who would have a chance of recognising her.
History: George grew up with a rather average life in the more fortunate and tidy areas of New Sanctum’s city, and from a young age was a bright and insightful girl. However, after the golden years of childhood she quickly began to develop a bratty little personality, demonstrated mostly towards her mother, who just couldn’t figure out where she’d gone wrong. George’s father, who was a lecturer of Literature at a university (and, notably, having an affair with one of his college students), was barely ever home and whilst their relationship had been strong when she was young, she mostly ignored him, and her little sister Reggie went completely ignored most of the time.
After many, many years, when George finally turned eighteen and her family had become a broken one, she’d - in her own words - gracefully mastered the art of ‘not giving a shit’, and had a pretty much apathetic outlook on all aspects of life. News of the supernatural on television? No, nothing seemed to phase her.
It was the last straw for her by-now bitter mother when George dropped out of college, and she was hassled into getting a job, so that maybe one day she could get enough money to move out and live her life not doing anything somewhere else.
And it was the first day at that very job (an office-job at ‘Happy Time Temporary Services’) that George was killed, during her lunch hour, by a toilet-seat falling at break-neck speed from the malfunctioning garbage chute of New Sanctum’s weather control centre.
However the story doesn’t end there. George, seemingly alive and stumbling around disoriented, is soon told that she is next up for the job of a ‘Grim Reaper’ by the first and only person that comes up and seems to notice her. Apparently, she was the ‘last one’ of the Grim Reaper who took her soul before her death, and must now take his place as an undead and a reaper of souls.
Death has lackeys, apparently. George is assigned to a group who is assigned to collecting the souls from certain kinds of deaths in their area (their area being New Sanctum’s entire inner city); namely Accidental Death, Suicide and Homicide. She has a physical body but must take on an alias to do her work, not to mention get a job and make money to not only pay for a place to stay, but buy food and drink that she still requires.
Every morning, George’s group meet up at the same café for breakfast, and their ‘leader’, Rube, who is given in the morning the names of the people who’s souls they must collect, hands out to each of them one of maybe a few post-stick notes. On each is written initials and a surname, a location, and an E.T.D (Estimated Time of Death). The assigned reaper must be there at that time, and take out the soul of the victim either directly before or after the death so that they may be free to move on to the ‘Great Beyond’.
Personality: It is only after her death that George seems to finally be appreciating the big and little things of life. Whilst she was alive she was known as stubborn, apathetic thought quite smart, and her mother admits that maybe that was why George turned out the way she had, because she learnt a lot of things before all the other kids her age. She seemed completely unmotivated to do even the simplest of tasks, and was most likely depressed. She felt that it didn’t matter what you did in life, because from what she could tell, ‘either way you’re screwed’.
However after becoming a reaper George seems to, after becoming undead no less, finally star to live ‘life and appreciate it alongside her Reaper duties. She still holds her stubbornness, and is easily weirded out or freaked out by the odd actions of others, sceptical of a lot of things and sometimes showing deep depression at the fact that she has lost her life and can now not do what she finally has the urges to do with and for family and friends, amongst other chances she blew. She has, though, developed a more curious and somewhat friendly personality, if such an awkward person when trying to talk to someone. Most of the time she looks upon life with dry, black humour, but there is always a moral and a lesson learned at the end of the story, and she is growing and learning still.
Powers/abilities: Being undead, George has the privilege of not being able to die, and has both a very high pain threshold and the ability to survive and heal rapidly from any injury. Also, her powers as a Grim Reaper allow her to take the soul of a living person out of their bodies, dead or not, though if the person is not due to die she can also easily put it back. To take one’s soul, George has to simply touch them.
George also has the power to ‘kill’ Gravelings (creature that humans can’t see that are thought to cause deaths, mostly accidental ones, in some way) by touching them in the same way she’d take a soul, though she’s not currently aware of this ability.
Extra: I’m playing George staring from around the end of Season 1 of the series, since out of the two series I’ve only watched the first so far. :D
In Canon: Whilst she uncaringly leads a boring life that is going absolutely nowhere, George Lass is killed instantly by a toilet-seat falling from the Mir Space Station, only to find out that she must remain in the world of the living as an undead Grim Reaper.
