HISTORY: Rei's childhood was uneventful but unhappy. Having been born to a family with two parents that worked nearly full time, she never truly experienced love and affection from them, nor did she ever receive proper socialization. From a very young age, she was alone and had to learn to take care of herself without the aid of adults. It wasn't until shortly before her seventh birthday that anyone began to take a personally interest in her.
Gendo Ikari was a distant relative of hers, related by marriage. He began to pay visits and give her what she perceived to be genuine affection. She was partially correct in her assumptions, though his motivations were primarily in obtaining a usable test subject for his Evangelion project. When she was nine years of age, Gendo began to at in loco parentis for her, and she was directed to move to a location within the city closer to the center of the project.
For a number of years, she was simply subjected to compatibility tests as it was believed she was too young to correctly synchronize without too many adverse effects to be of any use. It was not shortly before she turned 14 that she began to take part in synchronization experiments. After seven months of hard work, she was eventually able to synchronize with her EVA. It was then that it was decided she would activate an EVA for the first time.
However, the activation experiment did not go as planned. For an unknown reason, the EVA went berserk, and her entry plug had to be force-ejected. In the process of all this occurring, Rei received a number of injuries and required hospitalization. She was only recently released, and though she knows about the arrivals of her fellow pilots, she has yet to meet either of them.
PERSONALITY: Rei's personality is best described as "frigid." She is cold and unapproachable by the standards of even the friendliest of extroverts, with a tendency not to speak even when directly addressed. While she feels emotions just as well as anyone else, she rarely if ever expresses them--whether she doesn't know how or simply doesn't feel the need to is a mystery to all but herself. The only emotions that come to the surface with any frequency are scorn and irritation at what she views as her peers' immature behavior.
To Rei, logic can be simplified very easily down to black and white without any need for a confusing gray area in the middle. Of course, being that she rarely makes her thoughts known on anything, her harsh viewpoint and unsympathetic attitude is rarely a factor when people form their opinions of her. However, the brisk, businesslike attitude that similarly results is. She always seems to have some goal that she is trying to quickly and efficiently accomplish and brushes aside all that doesn't have to do with it.
Despite her unfriendly, impersonal nature, Rei is extremely loyal to those she believes have earned her devotion. Gendo Ikari is, however, the only person to have obtained such status in her mind. Her positive traits beyond that include her sense of responsibility, her reliability, and the fact that she generally exhibits more maturity than most others her age.
POWERS/ABILITIES/COMBAT SKILLS: None; however, she is capable of piloting a giant robot known as an EVA. She is designated to pilot EVA-00, the prototype.
EXTRA: A distant cousin of Shinji Ikari's, related on his mother's side. Works as a pilot alongside Asuka and Shinji. Is totally Gendo's favorite.
IN CANON:
Anime- "Rei Ayanami is a fictional character and one of the three primary protagonists from the anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion and the films Evangelion: Death and Rebirth and The End of Evangelion. She is the First Child (First Children in the Japanese version) and pilot of Unit 00."
Manga- "In this manga, Rei is somewhat more "human", in the sense that she responds to human contact more readily."
Shinji Ikari Raising Project- "In this series, Rei is a distant relative of Shinji's (from Yui's side of the family, in homage to the original). She's the first person the reader sees, as she comes to Tokyo-3. Here, she's portrayed as an intelligent girl (on par with Asuka in the series). However, due to her unhappy childhood, she's also somewhat cold to others."
