Earlier this week someone created the 13 millionth LiveJournal account since the service started in 1999. anildash likes to point out that LJ has surpassed the population of Illinois, the fifth largest state in the U.S. To continue on with more good news, we have a few announcements to make:

While I'm happy to see the legitimate pedophile communities get yanked down, I can't believe LJ didn't go more into it to see WHICH ones were legit and which ones weren't.

Also, what pisses me off? Months ago I reported to communities, involving parents that like to molest/sleep with their children. When I received a response back from LJ, it was nothing more than "sorry, can't do anything about it because there's no proof they're actually doing those things". What the hell?

That's messed up. I guess they only respond to "Warriors".

Or advertisers. Mere users don't count, I guess.

Unfortunately, I think that's where the issue lies. In order to get a response from them, their bottom line has to be threatened.

Perverted Justice has been trying for almost a year to get those communities and users shut down by hitting both the advertisers and LJ and then this POS group does it almost overnight? Something is fishy here.

Their first post on their blog about LJ appeared almost two months ago, so not exactly overnight but I can see how it seems that way because we're now only just finding out about it.

Ditto that. I reported a community in which members frequently post explicit photographs of very young-looking girls (and by young I mean early to mid-teens) and got that exact same response.

What's jacked up about that is, it doesn't matter what the actual age is of the people participating in a photographed or videotaped sex act are...it matters what the perceived age is. You can have someone 18 years old and legal in every way, but if they're dressed up to look younger and it's marketed as such (meaning, if the community it's being posted in or the people it's being sold to are led to believe they're younger than 18), then it is illegal. That's precedent set by law. AND grounds for criminal action for letting it stay up.

Way to go LJ! They opened themselves up to a lawsuit on that one.

The crazy thing about this it was that I didn't ask that the community be suspended or deleted, I asked that they be requested to make their entries FRIENDS ONLY. And got the form letter response.

*boggles* You'd think they'd give a damn about *something* in that. Especially when the request was mild in comparison to most!

EXACTLY my thought.

ack! I should read closer to legal briefs and all...the law I was thinking of that I just referenced was overturned by teh Supreme Court for being too broad. *headdesk* You'd think that those classes in criminal law that I took where we read case studies and legal briefs would help out, but nooooo. Dang reading comprehension.

My goodness, I would *hope* it got overturned! If the goal of the laws is to protect people under 18 from exploitation, this would seem like an extremely stupid way to do so.

Also in response to your second paragraph: SERIOUSLY? Jesus. This whole situation is making me seriously reconsider continuing to pay for my account.
