Enabling automatic payments? notaduffer December 22 2011, 21:55:27 UTC
I'm not too upset about the auto-disabling of customized comment pages. It could well be a glitch, and we can easily fix it.

But I'm hearing reports from my friends that you auto-enabled account payments on some of their accounts. EVERYONE CHECK YOUR AUTOMATIC PAYMENT SETTINGS HERE. My one paid was done with a gift credit card that I used up long ago, so I'm not worried for me, but this could be a serious problems.

I don't know. Could be a glitch, could be malicious, but I personally know three friends who had this problem and I'm hearing of more. Watch your paids, people.

Please tell your friends to report this to the Better Business Bureau. This is an illegal business practice.

The BBB is a voluntary association. If LJ is actually turning on automatic payments without permission, if a payment goes through, I'm fairly sure that counts as theft and the local Attonery General's office (in the US) needs to be contacted -- in other countries, I'm not sure who would be the relevant people to talk to: fraud division of the police?

Man, this is super duper illegal. Holy shit, it's like they're trying to go out of business.

Honestly, I've been wondering that for a while. Strikethrough didn't kill the site and DDoS didn't kill it, so why not try something like this? I wouldn't put it past the government (of any nation, not just Russia) to try to kill something that was so big and caused so many problems for them.

But then, I'm a conspiracy nut like that.

Conspiracy theory: igirick actually works for the government and was employed to take down livejournal from the inside.

And now it all makes sense.

I'm thinking the same thing. igrick is pro-government/Putin supporter.

I think that whatever trick you're using to make the user link there isn't working properly any more :(

This seems to be, primarily, happening to accounts that have been continuously paid for over a year or two or more, or more accurately back when LJ had automatic payments as the default system for paid accounts rather than manual. I checked all of my paids and none of them changed status, but all of mine were also only paid for relatively recently, just in the last year and a half, when manual was the default.

Yes, that's the pattern I'm hearing. So if that applies to anyone reading this, make especially sure to go and check. It was probably a rollback glitch with the settings or something.

This account has been continually paid since 2008, but I've never used auto-payments. Is it only happening to people who had it enabled at one point?

No, I've heard it's happening to people who've never had it enabled before. If you have the info of an active credit card attached to your account you need to check!
