LJ staff are actively dangerous to LJ users reddragdiva September 11 2010, 20:06:58 UTC
Stay classy, LiveTwitFace:

(a) LJ staffer dnewhall using his staff admin powers to leave a creepy comment on a locked post (difficult, but possible)

(b) LJ staffer brenden busted using a sockpuppet (getyourownbitch) to troll the latest news post telling people he's going to crosspost their stuff just to piss them off.

People say "oh, it's all those Russians, the US LJ staff are nice people." But the actual available evidence of behaviour strongly suggests that, for your own safety, you should regard anyone who's still working for LJ to be reprehensible scum unless they have amazing character references and a truly spectacular excuse to still be there.

In particular, that dnewhall is still staff proves that LiveJournal actively does not care, and allows its staff to treat your private entries as a perk of the job.

So, remaining US LJ staff. Do you have a really good excuse for lending your name to this reprehensible organisation?

The point is, is that they HAVEN'T done anything about these users. So either way you look at it, they're getting a bad rep

I have a right to be upset about this. It doesn't matter if I'm mad at the "right" person or not. The fact that some of the staff violates their own TOS for whatever reason, IS NOT COOL. Let's say you go into a store, and you're...sexually harassed. You do whatever you can to get that person fired, or at least have some consequence for his actions, but nothing comes of it. This, in my opinion is very similar. The fact that these staffers can do, essentially, anything and not be reprimanded for their actions is not ok. Just because some of the staff doesn't do these things, that doesn't make these violations ok.

I worked as a cashier once, where there was another co-worker treating some customers like shit. I wasn't there that day, but I heard all about it the next day I came in for work. Just because I wasn't management, didn't mean people didn't come to complain about it to me. I did what I think most people in my situation should do, and reported it to my manager. He was reprimanded for his actions within that week.

Just because people are coming on here and complaining or fussing about the situation, doesn't mean we're "taking it out on them" or blaming them for other people's actions. It's just...where else are we supposed to go?

Sorry I misunderstood :) and you didn't seem hostile at all. I apologize if I came off that way as well.

And I don't know if you saw it up there, but I also said I wasn't upset with you just with the situation :)

Glad to see we're on the same page!

"There are two kinds of evil people in this world. Those who do evil things and those who see evil things and don't try to stop it" (Janis, Mean Girls).

The other LJ staffers know what's going on, and while yes, it's hard to go against people in your company because you run the risk of losing your job (or maybe worse), but someone in that company has to stand up and say enough is enough. We, as users, can only do so much on our end, someone on their side needs to speak up for us since we're not behind the scenes, sort of speak.

Sorry if this came off harsh or personal, I did not mean it like that and this wasn't a direct attack to you, I'm just trying to offer up another viewpoint on the matter.

True, I can't deny that. I would definitely feel more anxious about being stuck between a rock and a hard place, but you gotta pick your battles.

With respect, I disagree. Were I in any of their shoes, I would quit. Comes a time where there is no middle ground- right or wrong: one choice and only one.

Personally, I'd rather starve than work for a company like LJ, which clearly has no intention of cleaning up their image. That dnewhall asshole is proof of that. What he did was criminal, and nothing has been done about him for months.

As I said, the above was my personal standpoint, and I disagreed from a personal standpoint.

As for the remaining U.S. staff, I can only hope they're all actively seeking better jobs while doing their best where they are right now. To me, knowing that where they're employed now is an entity from which they need to disassociate thmselves, would be more important than a mass walk-out (I live in South Africa: here, we walk out).

And I do point fingers at the right people: as I said, LJ is not a company I would work for.

Just my personal standpoint.
