Getting information about new features etc. is nice, but there is a fine line between informing your users (which includes informing them of problems etc. as well) and marketing.
I *never* (seriously, never) comment on news posts, because they get so many comments, but I feel I have to here. I have news on my flist so that I hear about, well, important LJ news. Up until last week, I considered it to be a low-traffic journal that was worth keeping on because the occasional post (maybe once a month) might be long, but was usually mostly worth reading. Now? Two mostly pointless posts in as many weeks, long, no cuts. One more and I'll be booting it. I have friends in (comparatively) far-flung places whose lives I care about, whose LJ's are the main way I keep in contact. Long news posts stop me spotting updates from them. That really annoys me.
Two mostly pointless posts in as many weeks, long, no cuts. ...and I've already booted it. I'll get my information from lj_releases, I don't need all this marketing cluttering up my Friends page.
