Oh wow. Oh wow. That's our president.

As long as the promise of equality for all remains unfulfilled, all Americans are affected. If we can work together to advance the principles upon which our Nation was founded, every American will benefit. During LGBT Pride Month, I call upon the LGBT community, the Congress, and the American people to work together to promote equal rights for all ( Read more... )

No, I get that talk is cheap -- I'm not as wide-eyed as all that, even with that subject line -- but mostly I'm amazed that he said it at all.

I think it's a step.

Maybe I'm giving Obama too much credit? But as it's only been four months, and from the news it appears as though there are a lot of other things on his plate ... I'll be interested to see where he takes his stand on gay rights, but I'm not prepared to eyeroll about symbolic politics just yet.

I cheer.

Has he not done much on this issue? No, he hasn't, but this is something and if you really think about it, it's a BIG thing. It puts LGBT in the same category as "race" and "culture" and "gender" and in a very subtle way could help lead the American people en masse to realize that this difference should be protected the same way those are.

It's subtle, but it's there. Pride months are a dime a dozen, but they get covered in schools, where changes start.

Are there problems with his track record? Yes. Does he have work to do? Of course. This a free pass? Dear God, no.

But I do think that this is a much more subtle, much more masterful stroke than might be apparent right from the start and I give him props for saying and doing it.

...also, wish him best luck with the economy.

Seconded, Esther. Danii said it far more eloquently than I'd have managed. *has the warm fuzzies now*
