Zach, holding Alec aloft by the throat, to Max: You're 452. I know you. You're in my unit.
Max: Yeah. I'm Max.
Zach, looking at all the people they've laid out: What about them?
Max: ...They're not in our unit.

Zach drops Alec, who was hi, being strangled, and walks off with Max. Alec gets to his feet.Alec, not okay: Fine. I'm fine ( Read more... )

Oh God that was amazing.

"Jared Padalecki? Where did you come up with that, a role-playing game random name generator?"

I have to admit what used to frustrate me most about Alec in general was how often he was used as a punching bag for Max's Manticore feelings. Like, here he is having 10 more years of Manticore than her and yet she gives him no room for moral growth. He plays by her rules or... she beats him up.

Also? He had 10 more years of Manticore. I was always fairly irritated that after 10 years of no practice, she kept kicking his ass.

Oh, but don't you know? It's because she's fighting dirty. *eyeroll*

It bothers me too. A lot. I think one reason I like "The Berrisford Agenda" so much -- aside from the obvious -- is that Max? Comes across as callous and awful the entire time. And I can't buy that it's just because it's so hard because he looks like Ben.

One other thing I do like about Alec is he has no qualms about hitting her back. I would really have loved to see some canon where she wasn't supposed to be the engine for his reform.

I love Berrisford. I love it to death. Because, you're right, everyone around her seems to be onto the fact that something more is going on and Max is callous and awful.

Plus: Alec for the win!

And I struggled through S1 for the JA, so by the time S2 hit, I was firmly in the belief camp that DA wasn't actually a show about Saint Max at all. It was a show about how much sticking to your guns at the expense of understanding other people made you narrow minded and irritating.

I read it as a show about how the "one person to save humanity/our people/the specials" is problematic because it creates a sort of messiah mentality in a leader where she can never see her own decisions as being wrong, or her leadership will crumble.

But, I had to do that, or I ended up screaming and leaving the room every time Max opened her mouth.

I tend to have to do that anyway, except when Joshua gives me cause to cheer by finally telling her to stop it with her horrendously patronizing treatment of him and keeping him hidden and safe and augh.

The random episodes of S2 that I've been picking through lately -- I'm profoundly uninterested whenever it's stuff that revolves around Max. She just. I don't like "one person is the key to world salvation!" stories, like you say. They leave so little room for the efforts of other people.

I just keep myself entertained by shouting "MORE ALEC!" at the screen whenever I can. There is no such thing as too much Alec.
