The Fryes I hanker after are the Harness 12Rs, but I don't know if that's just because they look so hardcore or because one of my original characters wears boots a bit like them!
Oh god, they're gorgeous. Sort of thing I can imagine on the feet of some badass cavalry officer. But nearly $400? Jesus Christ!
Coincidentally, I've been looking for boots myself - my old jump boots are getting worn and are losing their watertightness, which is usually the point at which I know they need replacing.
I think I've been a bit spoiled by army surplus, since the prices at high street stores for nice boots are astonishing. I might just get another pair of the same type, they're reasonably affordable even when brand new, and dirt-cheap if you don't mind them a bit dinged-up.
And if it's really fancy brown army boots you want, you can get authentic reproduction Corcoran jump boots for about $150 - that's a bit out of my price range, but it's a whole lot more affordable than those ones!
Good point about army surplus. And also about the Corcorans; my existing pair of winter boots were somewhere around $150, which is not cheap but certainly less expensive than what Zappos quoted for the Fryes I was hankering after (more like $250-300).
I couldn't say for sure - the boots I've worn have always been battered old pre-owned ones, so they've already been broken in by somebody else. They do tend to be a bit rough on the soles of your feet, but that might just be my habit of inadvertently always buying ones that are a bit too large.
And oh gosh. War Horse. Do want. (WWI uniform is unfortunately inextricably linked with Blackadder for me now, but even so. Still good.)

I used to own a pair of boots like that. Unfortunately, I bought them when I was 11 and then my feet grew. Stupid feet.

Is Ron Livingston's assessment of "corrugated tin" accurate? I have to admit, I am secretly fond of the "soak 'em in the bathtub" idea.
