I think it helps that we're so explicitly dealing with humans, at this point. This big bad is human and human-created (which is how I think of monsters, honestly -- that they were dreamed into existence, but I bet this season will prove me wrong within the show). I've heard some spoilers that say this won't last long, but if this is the base of the season, I'll be very happy. (I love monsters anyway! So automatic happy.)
(Heh. Yes, I was pretty at peace with walking away then. Damn you, Gamble! <3)
There's some statement being made about authenticity too. I can't put my finger on it all yet, but I'm thinking about it Yes, yes, think about it, beause there's something there and I'm sure they are going to play with it, especially given the honesty of the Lisa and Dean relationship compared to the secrets the Campbells are hiding from Dean and Sam.
I'm happy you liked it. It seems like a fresh start, doesn't it? I just hope it delivers.
Absolutely! As usual, you're on the money. And in a way, I feel like the question of authenticity hasn't really been addressed yet -- or maybe the cohabitation of authenticities. Wow, I just pulled that out of my ass. But the idea that Dean's life with Lisa and Ben is just as good and real as his life on the road hunting, that is an interesting and new tension. I think, if the show stays this careful and restrained (Ben Edlund aside, whose crack is awesome), it could be a really fabulous season. To fresh starts!
or maybe the cohabitation of authenticities Yes. yes! I think this is where Dean, at least, seems to be headed. I'm really pushing for this theme to be explored this season, though I don't want to be too trusting again (you know, Lisa is awesome, she could be killed any moment, now).
I remember writing a long meta at the end of season 5 explaining why Dean was the perfect candidate for making that ideal of normalcy the show has destroyed through five years work, and it was because Dean, beside an idealistic vision of normalcy, had the tools to create a sincere environment, past negative experience to compare to and yadayadayda, you know I'm wordy. In fact it was the only element that kept me intrigued for a continuation of the series. I was very glad not to be contraddicted with the season opener.
You know what's hilarious and great? That Dean Winchester, Mr. Hold-It-In-And-Hide-It, is the arbiter of sincerity. Which I agree with! It should be messy. Those boys do messy really well.
The choice to make Dean go back to Ben and Lisa was amazing, by the way. I LOVED IT. And I am loving how Lisa is growing and, you know, getting her own voice and calling him out. Yes, please let her stay alive!
I found your review really interesting and insightful, especially as I had the opposite deep-level reaction to the premiere! Thanks for this. I'm going to go think critically now and ponder.
Either way, I'm very interested to see where we end up!
I saw your post, and I had wanted to comment, but I was, alas, dead! I've been seeing a lot of interesting meta posts about your misgivings about Sam, and if you haven't seen this one, I think it's good -- it really solidifies a lot of the problems of Sam not being Sam I would have. I think Sera Gamble is a good enough writer to realize that, now, and I trust her way more than Kripke as a showrunner already.
But yes, it will definitely be a ride of a season -- I love that I'm waiting eagerly for the next episode now! It's nice to actively like and be excited by the show again.
You know how it is when someone says something and you realize you've been thinking exactly that without knowing it?
Authenticity! YES. I am questioning the legitimacy of Grandpa Campbell's claim to Dean's loyalty, and I am in fact wondering if he really is Grandpa Campbell, but you've made me realize that may be beside the point.
And as Aspen said elsewhere, the fact that the very first monster of the season is a djinn? May be deeply significant on a thematic level. Real life vs. fabricated fantasy ... oh yes. Oh yes.
Ooooh, yes, YES. And it's so interesting to see them tackling a different kind of destiny, in a way: before it's been all about the Winchesters' Place In The Universe, but now it's about having a place in a family, with a long history that comes before them, and where you go from there and how you grapple with that, which they truly have never had to do... ever. I think audiences can relate to this so much more, and it's why special destiny storylines bore the pants off me. This one's going to be so interesting!
....HA. I just realized that a lot of those questions are basically what I chose to study in college. Can you choose who you are and how? was my original Fundies question, and it came from watching a film about the consequences of who others see you as (The Pianist). THIS IS GOING TO BE SO INTERESTING.
