Van Klinken knows Hoobler well enough to know that missing breakfast is not an option. He calls his name again as he ventures into the barn. Sleeping outside may be for suckers, but if Hoobs is in trouble, it's Van Klinken who'll have to clean it up.
Luck is with them both today, though. "Over here," Hoobler whispers loudly. Van Klinken can see his boots sticking out past a bale of hay. He approaches, rifle ready just in case, and stares. Hoobler looks up, his expression bashful, from underneath the heap of barn cats curled up next to and all atop him. "I can't move," he insists. "I don't want to wake them all up at once."
Van Klinken snorts. "Self-preservation?"
"Yeah, that's right." He tries to nod at the big calico curled up by his neck. "Can you get this one first?"
The cat barely wakes up as Van Klinken lifts her, though she does purr loud as a C-47.

I love how Hoobler, usually a risk-taker, knows he's met his match in a pile of cats.
