Let's start with the books.

Finished: Ender in Exile, by Orson Scott Card

This story deals with Ender on his trip away from Earth and his first couple colony worlds. And what can I say about it? It's okay, but nowhere near the best of the Ender books. (slightly more spoilers behind the cut)

Yeah, I recently read The Witling, another of Vinge's early works (at least I hope it was early, and not a serious regression), and I had similar issues to you.

I like Egan a lot, and I really liked Diaspora, but yeah, I find I really have to be in the right mindset to read him because he's so sciency.
