smugness takes a dive

May 16, 2017 17:48

There are times when I feel I’m channelling my inner sophisticated and professional adult with laudable success. Last night’s meeting was all about data, something I loathe. But the data was looking at the school’s senior classes and their results on the all important end-of-year exam. My class’ results were SPECTACULAR. Above the state average in ( Read more... )

I won't laugh at you today, because I walked into a pillar while asking my boss a question. He was mortified. He thought it was his fault...

Haha well I will laugh at you today Bec, because I need the laugh and also you are a good buddy for providing one - I'd be a very ungrateful human being if I didn't! Did you hurt your noggin or were you just left a bit stunned? Also, did you play up that it was his fault to get time off / longer breaks / paid lunch / flowers / etc?

Nah, I hit it with my shoulder. I was just laughing. It's not the first time I've walked into a pole (when I was in Year 9 I walked into one at school...I'm surprised I didn't break my nose).

It's lucky you didn't do yourself any damage - yesterday or in Year 9. I'm starting to think my kneecaps must be titanium alloy to have survived all the times I've fallen down on them. We're very lucky to have tough bones :)

Well firstly, congratulations on the fantastic results! That's wonderful you could help your average students so much :P

And as to your fall from grace :P Shit happens. Though it also sounds like it hurt, which sucks!

Thank you, I was very pleasantly surprised by how well they ultimately did.

It did indeed hurt and I didn't have time to do anything about it because I had an important assessment task with my Year 12s five minutes later. I had to suck it up and just bleed quietly for the rest of the day haha.

I don't think your tumble detracts from your achievement, well done

Thanks Zoe, I was pretty pleased but I still think I should work on basic stand-up-ed-y-ness before I get too cocky :)

I tried out Rowing for the first time this weekend. There were four rowers all together - two big oars each side of the boat. I was starting to get right into it, keeping the rhythm, moving as one with my fellow oarsmen (or oarspeople to be exact!). Feeling well smug at how quickly I'd picked it all up. The fifth person (the one in charge at the back with the direction stick thingie) asked how I was getting on. "Yeah, great. I'm really enjoy....." promptly lost the rhythm and control of the oar which pushed me back, off my seat, into the oarsperson behind me. Yeah, I can't do multi-tasking. I can totally empathise with you. Apparently, 'crabbing' is common for novice rowers. I did it three times in total *lol*

Anyway - well done on the results. You should feel proud, that is a bloody brilliant achievement!

PS: I'm over on Dreamwidth now.....

Haha oh that's awful, you little crabber! Are you going to keep it up? I've always had an aversion and fascination for rowing - sometimes I think it looks like a horrific form of group torture but other times I'd love to try it.

Thanks, yeah I was very happy and pleasantly surprised by how well my group did. It helped too that I'd taught them for two years so knew which buttons and nagging/coaxing tactics worked best with them.

Awww et tu, Mandy?! Seems I got back just in time for half my friends list to decamp to Dreamwidth!! Setting up a Dreamwidth account seems like a huge hassle, mainly because I'm phenomenally internet lazy, but if I do ever get my online act together I will demand you add me there :P

I'm definitely going to keep it up - considering asking my line manager if I can work early morning on Tuesdays so I can go to the session that is on later in the morning. Get my oar in! I could barely walk the next day as my butt was sore (I don't know how that works either) but I'm pretty out of shape just now. Except for the shape of a crab - I'm clearly a good crab shape.

Never underestimate the power of that long-term relationship with a group of learners - getting to know them and helping them flourish in their own individual ways (aye, basically learning which buttons to press with who - it's the same in adults!).

Oui, je suis desolee mais *shrug*..... (what's French for '...LJ is being dodgy?' - we didn't cover that in high school and I'm rarely in the french speaking parts of the world)

Wow wanting to go into work early to fit rowing in - that's commitment to overcoming your crabbing status! And pfft your out of shape and actual out of shape are probably poles apart - I remember your dedication to kettlebelling and being super healthy from before my little LJ absence :P If you're a crab then I wish I resembled a crab like you (but without the claws - I'd poke my eyes out if I had those).

We didn't cover that in high school either. And I don't remember it coming up when I lived in France for a while either - but I get the gist of what you mean even in English :) I hope you know I mean this in a really nice and friendly way when I say I hope you have a horrible time on Dreamwidth and come back to LJ soon haha. Okay, okay I don't HOPE that, but it would be very nice for me!

As soon as you said asphalt, I saw what was coming.

And hey, maybe in your subconscious you were just trying to level the playing field, so to speak. The best people don't want to appear above others and are always thinking of others feel. And it could have been worse... at least a tampon didn't roll out of your bag. The first time I went to an amusement park with Steve while we were dating, I had a couple tampons in a Ziploc in my pocket, which promptly fell out on the first ride we went on. I saw them afterwards, but I'll be damned if I was going to be caught picking them up by anyone!

I'm surprised it took you that long to see it coming! The icon kind of gave it away :P

This is true - I'm probably just really subconsciously considerate and non-show-offy. Really that kind of humbleness should be rewarded, rather than just having stiff scabby skinned knees to show for it.

Haha you just left them there?? Love that you had them in a ziploc bag - I sometimes put mine in envelopes for ease of covert bag removal.
