Hmm...perhaps it was a sad attempt to hint that the final battle was very near. Instead of a healing item, perhaps a special weapon, similar to Sephiroth's. That would have been cool if Cloud unlocked a sword like Sephiroth's. Or maybe some special item that would assist with the final battle, just like you suggested.
I'll keep thinking about it...something should come to me.
I remember I took it rather literally the first time I saw it and started hoarding like mad. Lol. What I'd really like it to be would be an easter egg of sorts, though. Or some sort of object that had a reference to earlier games. Can't think of any ideas, but sort of like the FF9 Weapons Shops where Zidane points out what looks like a Buster Sword on the wall and goes "I knew a spiky-haired guy who used this." Or something along that lines, anyway. :P
It WAS a megalixir, I'm pretty sure that picking up that item just added another megalixir to your inventory.
What was it supposed to be? I think it might've been something as boring as a mis-translated item... But I'm really liking that theory about trying to psyche us into thinking it was the last elixir we'd be getting....
Eh..? I don't think that it's translated like that in the PC version.. Maybe I should check.
I don't think it makes much sense either, since that looks like it's the ice caves with the falling icicles, before you go to the Crator and have Sephiroth summon Meteor. There's a lot of game to play between that and the Last Boss.
