Jan 24, 2008 17:51

Who: Maya [defendingspirit] and anyone else.
Where: A city centre street
When: Saturday 26th January, midday
Notes: I need to stop neglecting poor Maya. :(

Maya was swiftly approaching the age where responsibility was something she could no longer avoid. Sure, she'd been busy helping Phoenix and his court cases, but it was an excuse to neglect something else: ( Read more... )

In fact, Yuuki had spent quite a long time watching Maya. She wasn't intending to be rude - she was just killing time whilst waiting for the headmaster her father to come out of the shop that, really, just bored her. After being allowed out after much bantering, this was not her idea of a, in his words 'father and daughter bonding!' day. She kicked up the remenants of the snow on the road as she'd walked in the direction of the café, shuddering several times from the cold that seemed to have set in. After grabbing two hot chocolates to go, she'd walked out again, only to have her attention drawn to Maya.

If she was thought she was cold (in something reminiscent of a trench coat and a scarf), then she had no idea how that girl must be feeling. She looked positively freezing, and Yuuki felt truly sympathetic for her, as her mittened hands readjusted her hold of the hot chocolate ( ... )

Welcoming the change in topic as things seemed all of a sudden a lot more colder, Yuuki embraced it. "A law office? Wow. Wouldn't it be boring to sit in court all day?" from what she heard of it (albeit not much), that's what it sounded like to her. "I'd have no idea, though - I'm still in school."

"Of course it's not boring!" Maya said, her mood doing a complete one-eighty again, almost upturning her coffee in her enthusiasm. She didn't seem to notice, however, and continued quickly, "It's never boring with Nick. He handles really big cases. Murders and stuff. Has me on the edge of my seat practically every time!"

Yuuki nearly jumped backwards in surprise at the rate that the enthusiasm escaped Maya, almost spilling half her hot chocolate down her front. "Nick, huh?" she commented, not sure of anything else to say. Courts weren't her thing, really - she hadn't been in one before, and all she knew was mostly from the headmaster and Yori. "How long have you been doing that?"

Maya settled down enough to reply, "Yeah, Nick. His name's not actually Nick, it's Phoenix. 'Nix'... Nick... It's a nickname, get it?" she grinned at her own utterly ingenius joke. "Actually, his best friend calls him it. I just stole it from him."

At Yuuki's second question, her face screwed up in thought. "Well, it was just after Sis passed away, so that would be... About a year and a half. Something like that. Before that I just lived in Kurain - that's the spirit medium village I'm from."

For the umpteenth time during their conversation, Yuuki smiled and had surpress a small laugh, but she didn't comment on it. There wasn't exactly anyone she could give a nickname too, unless Zero counted. But then again, all she'd be able to deduce was circle or something just as ridiculous. After Maya's explaination, her brow furrowed. "Sorry," she said as a precaution, in case she'd touched a nerve, but carried on, "It must have been a big change, coming here from a spirit medium village," she mused. "I knew I found it strange."

Maya shrugged off her apology. She'd gotten over Mia's death a while ago, because, as a spirit medium, she could speak to her if she wanted to anyway. Death didn't mean anyone was gone forever, and Maya supposed a little of her spirit lived on through the student she mentored: Phoenix.

"Not really," she began thoughtfully, "Sis moved into the city to become a lawyer when she was old enough, so I went to visit her a lot. It was really confusing at first, but I got used to how different everything was."

"I think the city's surprisingly... well, large," Yuuki mused. "It's quite small, but it's so jam-packed with everything! But then again that's what also makes it interesting," she said, one of her mittens finding the bottom of her chin as she tapped it in thought.

"You'd be surprised at how different my village is," said Maya. "For a start, we don't have that much money any more, so technology's not so advanced. And because only the women have spiritual abilities, the men just wind up packing up and leaving..." she trailed off, looking a little wistful for a moment, "So I'd never really seen many guys before, especially not all in one place. It was all really strange."

Yuuki blinked at that with a hint of surprise in her eyes. Well, it wasn't the surprise that Maya hadn't been around guys, but the fact her childhood situation seemed entirely the opposite. As a child she'd been raised sorely by the headmaster, and visited by Kaname - and then she met Zero. It wasn't like she never saw any girls, just never really... talked with them. It had changed after a few years when she was allowed to go to school, though. "I'd imagine it would be. When I was growing up I didn't see that many girls. There was just me, the headmaster, Zero, and... Kaname-sama," as always, her smile seemed to widen at the mention of Kaname.

"I can't imagine growing up with just guys. It'd be too weird," The small change in expression was not lost to Maya, who grinned impishly. "So who's this Kaname, huuuh?"

She noticed Maya's response and laughed slightly. She placed the hot chocolate she had been holding on the table, as she rested her face in her hands. "Kaname-sama," she started, the grin once again widening, "Is the one who saved me from a blizzard. I've known him for near all my life."

"You sound pretty close," Maya said thoughtfully. She blamed Sora for her sudden interest into others' affairs, but giving couples a prod in the right direction never hurt anyone. "--Wait, a blizzard? Sounds... wow."

"We are! Or.. we were," Yuuki said, an echo of sadness in her voice. She didn't get to see him as much as she liked.. only once or twice a day, usually. Sometimes more, if anything happened, since then he often came to see her and see if she was alright. She nodded. "Kaname-sama explained it to me. You know the machines that control the weather? I got caught in a blizzard out of the city, and when I was almost killed- he came. And he brought me here," she said slowly, purposefully leaving out the line of 'oh, I was almost killed by a vampire, but Kaname-sama attacked him first'.

"I see..." Maya said quietly, lost in thought. "Then that must mean you don't know your parents?" She could definitely relate, there.

Yuuki shook her head. "No. It's sort of like amnesia- I don't remember anything from before that. But the headmaster took me in, and... I guess part of me doesn't really mind not knowing. I'm happy like this," she said, offering a slight smile. She was Yuuki, and she had people who loved her for who she was now. Besides, she'd only been five years old, and now being sixteen... it was different.
