Ginny, Neville and Harry spork Dumbledore's Army Chapter 2

Jan 20, 2010 00:21

My sporking of Dumbledore's Army and the Really Dark and Edgy Year has gotten some additional attention because I posted about it of the HMS_STFU. I was thinking about continuing it a bit because sporking really appeals to me for some reason. But I decided to enlist Canon Neville and Ginny to help me this time.

As I don't have the time or patience ( Read more... )

Oh. Oh man. That is terrible. Sexist and OOC and purple prose-y, and just plain terrible. Why do the tvtropers like this fic so much? They usually have good taste!

is that it satisfied a need for those fans who wished we could've seen more of what Hogwarts was like in that final year. It's a highly detailed fic that shines the spotlight on popular supporting characters and gives more to do for plenty of the background characters ( ... )

You've hit the nail on the head there. I'll never get why fans of characters want to whitewash their flaws. It's the same phenomenon with Hermione fans honestly, they make her out to be some sainted martyr who can do no wrong- and if she was actually like that, there's not way she'd be my favorite.

Then there's the fans who whitewash Snape into a completely victimized woobie who got screwed over by that bitch Lily and was just trying to "toughen his kids up". Which completely wipes out anything that makes him interesting. And if Snape and the rest aren't sainted martyrs, they're complete monsters. It's like fandom can't understand shades of gray.

But I just love flawed characters- I'm a Steph fan after all. :P

I swear, someday I'm going to do a fic that does go over the missing year, because I think it's interesting- but I'll probably rotate the POV between the three leaders. But for now I'll be content with the awesome fic bluejaybirdie recced- maybe there's some more out there that don't suck?

I'd have to agree with this. Me, personally? I think I just got kinda caught up in the whole thing, and the praise from others tinted my perceptions. I have a problem with that. The reverse, too -- once I read criticisms of something, even something I previously liked, I have a harder time enjoying it. This has the odd effect of me being pleased when I find that I disliked something I've only seen praised (Haibane Renmei, My Neighbor Totoro, this one two-million-word-plus Ah My Goddess fanfic) -- because even if it is just me having bad taste, at least I know that the opinion is all me, that I'm not a total sheep. (This is also why I like debates -- in theory, at least, they force my mind into evaluating stuff based on its merits.)

I did find the portrayal of Snape questionable, and the Dumbledore-bashing at the end raised an eyebrow. So I guess I wasn't completely blinded to its flaws. Maybe I'm more conditioned to be wary of other characters getting Sue-ified, more so than Neville ( ... )

And what's with the chivalorous thing? Is that sexism? I WILL SMITE IT.

Bwahahah I love Ginny. Thanfiction's issues with women have issues, and they're busy making baby issues. Having Neville paw Parvati right after she's been tortured? I just -- kill it, kill it with fire.

That was great -- the sporking, obviously, not the heinous fic. Neville, Ginny and Harry were hilarious.

I'm glad you liked it! I love Ginny too, and I adore writing all of them. I certainly makes the experience a lot more fun.

But Thanfiction's is so right to be condescending towards women! His wife left him that one time with their sparrow-son! He doesn't think womankind is totally evilbecause of this, so we shouldn't hold it against him. *rollseyes*

The truth is stranger Thanfiction... Really! ladywhitehart January 22 2010, 02:42:02 UTC
I guess you didn't know that Thanfiction isn't really a man--just a very talented scam artist. Great sporking though.

Um, yes, he is. He identifies as a man so he is one. To say otherwise is pretty damn transphobic.

"And I would kill you if I ever heard you saying that. And I have NINE people who can be used against me, thanks very much. Thirteen if you count Harry and Hermione...fifteen if you count Neville and Luna..."

I can't get these numbers to work. Molly and Arthur + her six brothers = 8. Who's the 9th? And who are the tenth and eleventh if Harry and Hermione are twelve and thirteen?

Otherwise, a hilarious takedown of a very deserving fic.

For that matter, didn't Percy join the order AFTER the Dumbledore's Army events? That'd make the Suethor's next line "She’s got eight family members in the Order of the Phoenix." impossible.

Or are we counting Fleur?

I think he's counting Fleur, which would make sense. She's married into the family and all.

Ha, I'm as bad with numbers as JKR, sorry about that. And thanks! :)
