In which I spork overrated Harry Potter fanfiction by a wanky author

Dec 20, 2009 02:56

Recently on fandom wank, there's been a bit of a to-do about the author of a certain fanfic being well, a jerkfaced con artist. He also has a sparrow for a son. A lot of people liked the fic, and I saw it recced on TVtropes once and tried to read it, but the first chapter was just so OOC and full of genderfail that I couldn't get past it. Which is ( Read more... )

Wow, I only skimmed this and OW THAT'S BAD. And I've only seen the movies (hence the skimming, to avoid serious spoilers.)

Do you want to read a REALLY BAD HP fic? One that is SO BAD in all other aspects of everything that the horrid sexism is noticed as an afterthought? YES YOU DO. (But you may have read it already...In that case, sorry for making you remember it...)

I give to you...
My Immortal!!

Ha! Yeah, I've read My Immortal through TVtropes, it's HILARIOUS, and I bet the authors a troll anyway- what pisses me off about this fic is the auhors clealy competent, but he lets his need for dark and edginess, his power fantasies and his sexism get in the way.

(By the way, if you like wank, I've now linked the fandom wank entries surrounding the author. They are AWESOME. As you saw, I was having a linking problem earlier but that's fixed now.)

Also, you really should read the books! They're much better than the movies!

Oh man, that's pretty bad. I saw it rec'd on TV Tropes, but never really followed up. I'm pretty glad I didn't, now.

What was the weirdest thing to me was that it seemed like Ginny was flirting with Neville. The whole putting her hands on his chest thing from behind was just weird. Touching someone's chest is a pretty intimate gesture, so it just felt creepy in the story.

Plus, IIRC, Hannah Abbott in the books was a shy, quiet girl. I just can't see crazy!Hannah...

Hannah's on panel reactions to stress and anger were bursting into tears. I'm betting she was just a very sweet, sensitive girl and that's why Nevill fell for her- she complimented him and knew what it was like to screw up and be easily stressed out.

And yeah, I kinda went "buh?" when Ginny started pawing Neville.

Nev! I found an antidote to that bad Dumbledore's Army Year 7 fic! It's a rather excellent one...located at http://community.livejournal.com/springtime_gen/63862.html#cutid1

Parts of this fic made me get a bit misty eyed, seriously. And I'm not one to cry because of fics, but it was just that damn good. Really uses pathos to pull you in with Neville's parents.

That was fantastic, thank you for recommending it! I absolutely adore the take on Alice Longbottom and Augusta, and everyone was in character! That's the sweet Neville I know!

Also, a good Snape. I liked when he not-so-subtly delayed the Carrow's from pursuing Neville. I think making Snape either a complete bastard or a complete woobie does a disservice to the complex character JK created, and the author did a good job in showing that balance in a couple short scenes.

When I first heard of this fic, I decided to start off by just reading the last paragraph of each chapter to see if I liked where it was going. I began to have doubts when it seemed like Ginny, Neville, and Luna were actually in peril when Snape sent them to the Forbidden Forrest. As a Snapefan, I loved reading about Snape's "lame" detention in DH because it was the first major DH clue that Snape wasn't the pure evil douchebage he seemed to be, and this fic was spoiling that. I finally decided not to read it when it sounded like Snape was advising the Carrows to go after Luna. I'm so glad I missed the part of Snape killing students. (And, seriously, if any student had actually been killed that year, I think it would've been mentioned in DH ( ... )

If any student had been killed, I seriously think McGonagall would be dead too- because there's no way she wouldn't have confronted the Death Eaters over that. She didn't challenge the Death Eaters during the seventh year because she knew she had to be around to protect the students and dying in battle when wouldn't help that- but once the DE's started killing her students, all bets were off. You saw her reaction in DH when Amycus suggesting sacrificing students. She was appalled, and she was going to fight him right there. She would die to protect a student from death.

So yeah, inadvertantly making aNOTHER female character a weakling in this fic. Go Author!

If there was a girl I kinda liked, and she choked me untill I lost conciousness, if and when I recovered, I probably wouldn't like her anymore. And I'd press charges. And file a restraining order (just in case the charges were somehow dropped). That's what any sane person would do. You sure as hell wouldn't marry someone like that. I mean, if the author had reversed the genders, ( ... )

Huh... so that's a sporking, eh? I sort of figured that it would be more like a MSTing.

I haven't read Harry Potter, but even I can tell that was a terrible piece of fiction.

Hey, followed you here through HMS STFU! And I'm glad I did.

I checked this fic out because I saw it on TV Tropes, and was genuinely curious. I only managed to get through the first chapter. The OOCness didn't hit me until I got to the bit where Hannah COMPLETELY FRAGGIN' SNAPS WHAT THE HELL. From what we've seen on Hannah, she seems more the type to bottle up that sort of stress and cry about it later. Not, you know, try to kill someone.

In any case, this is an excellent sporking- you've successfully verbalized my thoughts about why this fic fails.

Thanks! Yeah, this was completely OOC for Hannah. And it takes real talent to get someone who's had possibly cumalatively two paragraphs of development in canon OOC.

Your story is identical to mine. Checked it out through TV Tropes, finished the first chapter and couldn't go on. I've only HEARD what happens next and it made me twitch. I do want to go through and spork more some day, because it boggles me that this is so popular.

Your icon captivates me btw. I can't stop watching the kitty walk.
