Supergirls just fly

I kind of got onto an impassioned rant about Supergirl on s_d. Some person posted the end of Joe Kelly's run with the Straw!Supergirl being all "Supergirl should have no problems!" and Kara being all "Yes she should die Silver Age!" and the Kara being all "I'll be happy now!" and Kal being all "I immediately forgive you for your bratty behavior!"

I remember reading an interview somewhere where Joe Kelly said he was basing Supergirl on his own teenaged daughter. Which is... well wow thats full of all sorts of possible connotations, none of them good.

Actually, I believe that it was Jeph Loeb who said that, not Joe Kelly.

Hmm I tried to look it up on the net, and I can't find evidence for either...

I remember it being Loeb saying that as well. Damned if I can find a link now though...

I just don't understand why Kelly was so failtastic on that book. He's done so much cool stuff!

You just reminded me of my secret shame. A few years ago, I wrote a column cheering how wonderful Joe Kelly's Supergirl was.

In my defense, it was fairly early on in the run and we were just coming off of Loeb's opening arc and Rucka's Super-Incest. And I do admire him for trying to do a story about physical abuse in high-school romances shortly after a study showed that 1 in 3 high school girls are in an abusive relationship.

You'd think Supergirl would be the last character a story like that would work with, but when the boyfriend in question is an Apokolyptian who believes in the whole "Granny Hurts You Because She Loves You" spiel, it actually worked.

But after he started using the comic as a pulpit to attack the Peter David Supergirl fans (yes, some of them WERE calling for a return to the Silver Age Kara David wanted to bring back just before HIS book was canceled)... yeah, then it became total fail.

Still, good article. I may have to give the new Supergirl a chance.
