So, surfing TV Tropes has again left me to wonder why people have such a huge problem with scans_daily . There's quite a few people on Superdickery who hate it because it's too negative.

Super. Dickery. They THRIVE on negativity there. I find this hilarious.

Anyway, the way I see it, all comic book fans are either cynical or stupid/naive. I say this as someone ( Read more... )

I can't remember where it was, but I remember a line from someone's blog that said "scans_daily is the toilet bowl of the internet", and I was all "BZUH?". That was the first time since encountering S_D that I'd come across someone who didn't like it. I actually quite shocked.

It's a mixed bag of both positive and negative opinions and expressions that can be found there, but even the cynics among us almost always combine cynicism with a healthy dose of humour. I think the bottom line about comic fans and S_Ders in particular is that we're probably all masochists, and we enjoy it. Otherwise we wouldn't be able to laugh about it as much as we do.

A definite problem with racism and sexism

And don't even bother getting started on homophobia. It is something I will give DC credit for over Marvel, though.

Also, hey, do you have any advice for getting comic books uncancelled? Manhunter is cancelled again and I plan on buying multiple issues, but I hear you have experience getting comics uncancelled. How did you write your letters?

I don't post as often as I'd like on Girl Wonder because I have to think much more carefully before I do. It's good mental exercise, but sometimes I'm just too tired to find the right way to phrase things and by the time I come back to the thread someone's already said much the same thing.

Well said. I have even bought three Bande Desinee that were featured on scans_daily, and I don't understand a lick of French :D

Often at the same time. I'm definitely someone who's continually surprised and disappointed, while everyone else is going 'you really should know better'. I can't though; soon as something bad happens, it can easily be retconned within a few years, and then maybe it rubbished again just as quickly.

Scans_daily can be a useful barometer of what's keeping fans interested in comics, and in this regard shouldn't dismissed as fanwanking or whatever's the kinder term. I really dislike when it devolves into a writer hatefest (see any post about Grant Morrison). It aggrieves me to see so many jump on the bandwagon without much thought, but that's the power of anonymity on the internet and peer pressure for you.

Shane, you can't deny you are slightly cynical at times. : P

But actually, I'm surprised at how un...cynical you are. You are truly an exception.
