My impression of Fruits Basket, at least for the first few volumes, was "gothic romance." Orphan girl, poorly treated by her remaining relatives. Becomes servant to wealthy but secretive family. Has a choice between the handsome but somewhat cold heir-presumptive, and the tempermental but passionate black sheep of the family. Meanwhile, the family's evil patriarch schemes against them all.

Only thing missing was a cover with Tohru running outside the manor in her nightgown, only a single window lit.

Ahhh, you're making me remember how much I loved Fruits Basket when I read it in high school!
