Gushing about the Sailor Moon Manga rerelease and feminism

Mar 22, 2011 01:16

I considered working this into the main essay, but I'm too psyched, I just have to get out why I'm so excited about the Sailor Moon manga being reprinted. The out-of-print Tokyopop manga ihas with outdated art (Japan got shiny rerelease reprint volumes), flipped pages, English dub names and a general Blind Idiot Translation (especially obvious when ( Read more... )

Don't get me wrong, I ADORE the anime! I just decided to focus on the manga for this post and point out some things it did better than the anime/themes not present in the anime when going about my "sales pitch ( ... )

I've seen the Ami OAV's! That was entirely based on a manga story too, it's a shame, the other OAV's would have probably been based on the short stories that went with it, and those were not only really neat but gave a little bit of info about the girl's backstories (Mako's dead parents, Rei's estrangement with her father) that I wish had made it to the anime. There was one where Mako fell into a melancholy over exams, Rei's tragic story of love lost with one of her dad's aides, and this really cute bit where Minako infiltrated Rei's Catholic school and generally messed stuff up.

There's also that Haruka/Michiru OAV, and the one where the Senshi fight vampires, the second one also being based on a manga short story.

The live action has a lot of bits that carry over from the manga that didn't make it to the anime, actually, like the aforementioned backstories, costume designs, Rei's personality, Mamoru's deal with the Shittenou...good stuff.

This is one of the most beautiful tributes to the BSSM Manga I've ever read. Thank you!

Could I link to this at ontd_moonies? This is a great post about the manga (which I appreciate because my SM knowledge is pretty much anime only).

I was linked to this article via Tumblr. It is amazing, and you did such a good job at why Sailor Moon is not only awesome, but why strongly influenced me in my early years of college. I had seen the series dubbed when I was in high school, but the manga was introduced to me when I was 19, and it's one of the largest media influences on me (Slayers being another -- which actually predates Sailor Moon by two years when it comes to the novels -- which also has awesome female characters and a heroine who not only kicks a lot of ass and saves her love interest, etc ( ... )

You should! It's a great series. Lina is hilarious. It has a decent dub, and you can see all of that online for free through Funimation or Netflix and I think Hulu. I'm a fan of the original actors, and Funimation has the first two episodes of series 1 (Slayers) and all the episodes of the 4th and 5th seasons (Revolution/Evolution-R) subbed.
