This is it.
That was the simple thought that Kuroro had as he prepared to go collect his zombie companions. He'd desired the jewel for quite some time, the Shattered Life Stone, but he'd never been motivated enough to get it. Whilst it was true that it was difficult to get his hands on, it was far from impossible for him. The risk, and the effort

Considering they were going into a cave filled with deadly monsters, the two boys looked rather unequipped. Shito had a small satchel containing a flashlight and a length of rope, but he hadn't been able to think of anything else to bring along. He was just dressed in his usual school uniform with the cross-shaped tie clip.
He straightened up from his waiting posture when he heard the sound of tearing universe, and stared at the rent in time and space, through which Kuroro's head was poking through. "Hello, Kuroro. We're ready," he said firmly, and then walked towards the portal.

Well, short of throwing the sword. Which he could do, and it wasn't like he could lose it since it was chained to his wrist. But it was awkward and bulky and really not a smart thing to do except in an emergency.
He perked up when the room service arrived, however. "Food!" Like most teenage males, Chika ate like he had a hollow leg.

"That's true, but there'd be no point in going if we were just going to get cut up and eaten, eh?"
Letting out a little puff of annoyed air, he continued.
"Then again, in such small contained spaces, we're probably going to have at least one or two get close. You may just see some action of your own."
Perking up a little, he spoke again, between bites.
"You boys ever travelled by balloon before?"

Shito didn't fall on the food like a hungry teenager, either. He ate with impeccable manners, his napkin always close to hand to wipe any stray bits of food and his utensils handled with the grace of a finishing school graduate.
"I'm sure you won't be bored, Akatsuki," he commented in a condescending tone. "If you're really unhappy, you can be the one to pick up the gem and risk dying."
He glanced at Kuroro with a quizzical look. "By balloon? You mean like a hot air balloon? I've never been in one, why?"

Chika wasn't exactly making a pig out of himself either, though compared to his two companions he was certainly the most hearty eater, and the most careless of his manners. He saw no reason to beat around the bush and act like some kind of prince the way Shito did.
"I've never been in one either," he confirmed, curious.

"Well then, tonight will be your first time. It's by far the easiest way to get where we're going."
Standing and walking with devil like grace, he moved to a window and indicated towards a circle of small but steep hills outside of the city, visible from their high rise hotel. The hills were surrounded on all sides by thick woods.
"We'll just float above it all and drop right into the middle."
He turned back towards the boys with a smile, his eyes closed.
"Should be a good view as well."

The familiarity of fighting with Chika was obvious in the ease with which Shito's mood changed. He pulled his red eyes away from the irritating asshole and looked at Kuroro as he walked to the window.
"Sounds good," he said grumpily, and placed his plate back onto the tray. He began to clean up the detritus of their meal with a bit of a compulsive air, stacking the empty dishes back onto the tray neatly and carrying it out to set it down on the floor in the hall to be picked up by housekeeping.

"Alright then. I'm glad there are no objections. We would have had to have gone by foot otherwise."
Falling back into his seat, he smiled at the boys.
"So, how long have you two been connected like this?"
Reply
"Too long," he said irritably in answer to Kuroro's question. "Almost a year now, I guess it is."

The thought was depressing. At this time a year ago - once he'd gotten over the shock of the whole zombie thing - he'd been sure that he would be able to pay off his loan in a year and be back to normal. He'd kept up on his interest payments with no problems and even made a fair bite into the principle, but he was nowhere near finished yet ( ... )

A year...In that time, they'd probably at least made a superficial connection of some kind. Or they well and truly hated each other, but that was a connection of a kind.
His smile grew larger when Chika mentioned the money, and he gave a casual thumbs up.
"You stick with me, boys, and a pile of money is what you'll get."
He stopped to ponder for a moment, before speaking on.
"Say, do you boys age whilst you're like this?"
Reply
"That's why we're doing this," he said, glancing at Chika. "To put a dent in our loans. Even if we have to extend, we'll do a lot better this year with Kuroro's help."
He glanced at Kuroro again and shook his head in answer to his question. "No, we don't age."
Reply
"We don't age, we don't get sick, and barring getting torn apart, we won't really die again," Chika said, shrugging. "Well, or getting Reaped, but that's a whole other issue. Some people stay this way for years, as long as they want. But there's downsides. Even if you're not tied to someone else like we are."

Thoughtfully stroking his chin he added, "Although I do miss having such weak facial hair I didn't have to shave everyday. Not to mention the cougars."
He gave a wistful sigh. His early teenage years had in fact been incredibly disturbing, learning what exactly he was, the rot seeping into his mind until he was sure of it. Murder was his drug, his reason for living. But after he had accepted that, his late teenage years had been...enjoyable.
"Do your families know?"

He blinked at Kuroro, though. "Cougars?" he echoed blankly.
He ignored the question about families - let Chika field that one. Shito never talked about his family, and he didn't want to draw attention to the fact that he didn't seem to have one.
