Patience is a virtue. Good things come to those who wait. Look before you leap. Haste makes waste.

Carpet was well aware of all of those sayings and more. He probably embodied them better than almost anyone. After all, who else would hang motionless in the sky for hours, just to let his friends share a romantic evening together, just so they could watch the sun set, the moon rise, and the stars come out in peace? Who else would maintain a dark, lonely vigil, would wait ten thousand years for their best and (then) only friend to wake up? He didn't even complain or scold when the Sultan exclaimed and prodded at him like he was nothing more than some exotic curio. He liked the old man enough to hold his peace, even if he was a bit daft sometimes, and absent-minded here and there. He was old enough, as humans went, to where such behavior was certainly forgivable.

He was even patient enough not to mind nightfall, though it got tedious and lonely. The darkness reminded him unpleasantly of those centuries alone in the Cave of Wonders, and when all of his friends were busy sleeping, he had nothing to do. After all, who would design a magical carpet who could sleep? He had no use for it. None except to pass the time, to keep things from getting interminable. He was awake and aware every second of his life, such that it was.

That, perhaps, was why Carpet was so surprised by laying down in one place one moment, and finding himself in another the next. He wasn't sure what had happened, or how he had gotten here--or even whether he had been somehow knocked unconscious or not. He hadn't felt any change, or seen or heard anything to suggest that magic was at work.... Magic, after all, tended to be big and loud and flashy, with lots of sparkles and smoke and light

....Or well, Genie's magic was, at least. And there was nobody else around the Palace who could work magic, was there?

Confused, Carpet rippled and moved to rise from the floor, not realizing until too late that someone had just stepped onto him.
