“They’ll be back, but at least it will take them a while to catch up with us.” He leaned his head back and closed his eyes while his hand automatically reached for Trooper.
“Thanks, David. Now, get some sleep.”
“Can’t sleep,” David argued. “Any second now, the other scanner will take control, or the driver’s confusion will pass…either way, they will turn around and be after us again. We can keep a lead, but I have to take care of them before we get too much farther.”
“We have some time though, all the more reason for you to rest.” Brendan glanced over at the scanner, “And we’ll take care of them.”
“How much longer do we have?”
Estimating the distance they had left to travel, he answered, “Two hours at this speed. So, I’ll give you an hour to rest, and then I’ll pull over in clear sight so they’ll be sure to see us.”
David nodded, sinking into his seat.

“David?” Keeping one eye on the road and the other on the bright lights tailing close behind, Brendan reached over to shake his companion’s shoulder. “David? You need to wake up.”
Despite saying that he couldn’t sleep, David had passed out over half an hour ago; the poor guy must have really needed the rest. And Dean would have loved to let him keep on sleeping, but that simply wasn’t an option.
From across the truck cab, a soft moan and fluttering eyes let him know that David was indeed waking…just not fast enough.
“David, they’re right behind us. We’re going to have to stop now.”
The dazed look in his eyes instantly disappeared, and he turned to look behind them. “The scanner is driving now so I can’t pull the same trick again, but I can do something else.” Turning his attention back to Brendan, he ordered, “When I say so, stop the car on the right side of the road.”
Out of the corner of his eye, the agent could see David focusing on their pursuers again an instant before he heard, “Now!”
Slamming on the brakes, he turned their truck into the ditch along the road just in time to see their pursuers speed by, then make a sharp turn and flip over. “David, did you…?”
The sound of the cab door opening interrupted his question.
Without hesitation, Brendan jumped out of the truck after Kellum, his gun ready.
***
David ran around the crashed truck, keeping his distance until he saw the scanner stumbling out of the cab. Not giving his opponent a moment, Kellum stopped and concentrated his powers on the other.
***
The agent kept his gun trained on the unmoving man who lay halfway out of the crash while reaching down to check the man’s pulse.
Nothing.
Straightening, he moved around the overturned truck to see both scanners staring at each other, their bodies visibly tense.
He aimed at the man standing opposite David and prepared to fire.
“No,” David ground out between clenched teeth. And with that word, Brendan could feel an immediate disconnection from his body; he watched as he lowered the gun, unable to lift it back up.
What was David thinking?
***
What was he thinking? Battling against the other scanner and keeping Brendan under control was using too much of David’s power. He couldn’t keep it up much longer.
The other scanner was battering against the walls surrounding Kellum’s mind. He could feel shards trying to cut their way through while other sections of his shields were being rammed.
Though, even as he was under attack, he had his own weapons attempting to break through his opponent’s shields, funneling the pain he was feeling back to his invader.
But it wasn’t enough.
His control over Brendan was slipping, and his walls were faltering. Knowing that he would be defeated, David released Brendan, using that last tiny spark of energy to sustain him another few seconds.
Falling to the ground as his shields collapsed, he noted the gunfire accompanying him into unconsciousness.
***
They had to be kidding. Was Brendan now officially the telepathic sink of the CIA? Word had just been handed down: Kellum would be his partner until Freya was cleared for field duty…in 6 to 8 weeks. Then a more permanent solution concerning David would be reached.
Studying his new temporary partner, Brendan wondered how he was going to manage working with this guy for two months when he couldn’t stop thinking about those strange touches along his skin.
Remembering those touches seemed to instantly manifest them on his inner thigh, and he knew David was awake. “How are you feeling?”
“Just tired,” the scanner smiled. “Thanks for saving me, but you shouldn’t have interfered. I could have taken that scanner.”
“It seems to me that if you hadn’t done your…mind-thing on me, I could have ended it pretty easily, and kept you from overloading and ending up in a hospital.”
“I’m getting released today.”
“And going right back out into the field.” Brendan produced a file from the side table, flipping it open and reading the front page. “We’ve got a case…and it would be a lot easier to explain it if you would stop doing your scanner thing on my inner thigh. Save it for after you buy me dinner.”
