Screencap Adventure: Soul Blazer (Part 8)

Dec 20, 2008 16:20

Got a party to go to in about an hour, so let's pinch one of these off before I go get blindingly drunk.

Previous Adventures

Okay, next area: mountains! I hope there's Gorons. :D

As usual, the area - this time, a huge-ass cave! - is deserted. It's up to us to fix that!

Stairs will solve this problem!

Okay, most of those little mounds of snow? They're little burrowing molerats. You've gotta smack them with your sword while they scuttle about underground. How does that work? I have no idea.

Damn bright green snowrats. They get everywhere!

:D

Oh my god, we've stumbled upon The Shire.

(Ahaaaah, totally misspelled that as The Shite. ICE BURN?)

Anyway. Apparently we are starting on the north tip of the mountain? This is throwing all my videogame preconceptions out of whack. You're supposed to land in your airship at the very bottom and weave your way up through a gigantic mess of caves before this! D:

At least the mountain enemies are in full effect. These guys fan out in a square around their lair and shoot at you until you move close enough. Then they start divebombing you. And they usually stay just out of swordreach, too! Such nice fellows.

Magic solves everything once again.

Yetis! They walk and hit with clubs.

Blazer: Good morrow, sir, I have freed you from your captors. My name is Bl-
Grandpa: GODDAMN KIDS GET OFFA MY CAVELAWN

You can actually climb UP these slopes, albeit at a much slower rate than regular walking. THIS MOUNTAIN IS ALL BACKWARDS :<

More cash prizes. Blazer could open a jeweller's at this rate.

Moose bones?

ZOMBIE MOOSE BONES D:

ZOMBIE MOOSE BONES THAT CAN DETATCH THEIR HEADS D:

Zombie moose bones that can detatch their heads that give good EXP! :D

The zombie moose don't move, at least. Presumably because of the whole lack of muscles thing.

And we get more shortcuts back!

They're everywhere! They're coming out of the ground!

This kinda reminds me of Mount Ordeals from FFIV, actually. WHERE IS MY PALADIN UPGRADE

Huh. Apparently monster lairs are just acting as snowplows now?

Okay, yetis, easy enough.

OH GOD SNOWBALLS CHASING ME

THIS IS PHYSICALLY IMPOSSIBLE

IT'S NOT EVEN A MAGIC ONE

Lead them to the rocks...

And crash, no more snowball.

SNOWBALLS. SERIOUSLY.

WHY IS THIS EVEN HAPPENING

Hey, more old people! Maybe the mountain is a retirement home?

Ahahaha. Yes. I love this place.

SNOWBALLS EVERYWHERE

Oh, wow. Jackpot!

That's more like it.

That kinda looks like Golbez's armour, too. Did I fall into FFIV and just not notice?

...pffftahahaha. Snow Mountain. So original.

LIGHT ARROWS WILL SOLVE THIS PROBLEM. Because this is also Zelda, clearly.

"So, what'd you do today, Blazer?" "Oh, you know. Freed some souls, saved the world, got chased uphill by snowballs."

And in an abrupt change of mood, slidy ice! Whee! :D

Ahahaha. :D

MUCH SLIDING LATER

Geez, already? I was hoping for an ice-sliding puzzle.

Oh, so it's actually called the Mountain of Souls! That's a little better, I guess.

I'm moderately sure this is scientifically inaccurate, but I really couldn't back it up.

I AM LEGEND

STARRING LEGEND P. SNAIL

COMING THIS SUMMER

Awww. That's a good way to be. :3

A little suspicious? D:

And then he doesn't say anything else!

Okay, uh, no questions then? I'll be going, then...

Boo. You only live for a year, stay with love! D:

Oh, charming.

That comma isn't supposed to be there

And back to the Mountain!

The shortcuts are actually USEFUL this time, surprisingly.

They're all so tiny ♥

Downwards~

SO ORIGINAL, THESE NAMES. SO ORIGINAL.

The slime blobs really just bounce about, making them tricky to kill without taking a bit of damage.

These purple mages are the real difficult types on this mountain. They appear, teleport, then fire energy bolts at you. You have to kill them before they shoot or they'll teleport away again.

Fairly tricky when you have slimes bearing down on you too, but y'know!

Another trio!

Protip: do not whack these ice sculptures.

Mild shattering and skull-puncturing occurs.

Behold, the only use for the Magic Flair.

If you charge it up and fire, these bats - which the screenshots aren't too clear on, but they circle around you at the same distance as your magic soul orb thingie - can be caught by it and die.

Those robes kinda look like the Fey ones from Phoenix Wright, too. *needs to stop drawing game parallels*

THIS JUST IN: CRABWALKING INEFFICIENT AGAINST PURPLE MAGES.

*inappropriate wood joke goes here*

Heehee. LAYNOOOLE~ YOU'VE GOT ME ON MY KNEES~ LAYNOOOLE~ I'M BEGGING DARLING PLEASE~

More enemies, more paths opened. I am kinda running out of steam here. XD

Note the shimmery disappearing platform! It will come in handy just a bit later.

Oh, and our first way back! Better scan the area for more things to kill first.

I must say, the fixed-number-of-enemies thing is something I've not seen in many games. I remember hearing it was in one of the Parasite Eves, but implemented very poorly.

Still, it seems fairly intuitive here. You have a reason to go back and free all the souls though, so that's probably part of it.

Whoa, hello there, underground lake.

One of Hemingway's lesser known poems. "The Old Man and the Sea and the Snail."

Secret path! I didn't catch it flashing into vision, but it's here.

Looks like my luck just ran up. |D

Halfway there in both swords and armour! Yes, you get eight of each. I was surprised too.

Red mages! Can't get over there yet, though.

A jail? :o

Okay, NOW we can go back.

Oh, right. Apparently this is what the place is called! Makes sense. :B

I get to watch midgets riding snails?

...today, my life is complete.

And they're off!

...very slowly.

GAH! Teleported outta frickin' nowhere!

This is basic game logic by now, but it's good to have it clarified. Even if it is through a talking mushroom. XD

And once a certain amount of time elapses, you get teleported right back.

Like invisible pathways, maybe? Way ahead of you.

...oh shit, that's right, Christmas is in less than a week! D:

*hop* :D

And they basically just circle the pond. I sure giggled, though.

Hee. KNOW WHAT TIME IT IS, KIDS?

That's right! It's dream time!

"And one empty chest, just for kicks."

Uh, yeah. We may have kinda stolen your stuff. Sorry about that.

Wayyyyy ahead.

And with that...

Laynole once more!

And awayyyy I go!
