... you know how sometimes you might reach out & touch something that's too hot - like a pot cooking food, or hot food, or sip a hot drink, or like, even some art thing you're working on, hot glue gun or whatever- I think many people have done this, but I guess not everyone ( Read more... )

Right. Good question.

I would like to follow up with my own. Why do people taste something bad and then expect you to try it to see how bad it is? Why does it work? "Oh my God this is horrible! Try this. Isn't it horrible?"

There are an innumerable number of factors that will change one's willingness to take or avoid risk. I think there are different spheres or levels of this drive toward danger too ( ... )

well - no space for a book here- thanks this is an interesting way to approach why people do this (3 fold - they talk themselves out of it, think they can handle it - I think that's what I can do / oh, it won't be that hot- I'll be really quick. ow.) and or they enjoy the risk, somehow or something akin to purposeful engagement in this, which I had not really thought about.

Also I think there is #4 - as statedby Beocywn akin to "oh i forgot the pan in the oven I'll grab it / or I forgot the spatula sitting in thepan/on the skillet - doh - it's red hot. I'd qualify this in the 'absentminded professor/distracted' category of #4.

like grabbing a pan that's been in the oven for 30 minutes with bare hands

I haven't done that but I have grabbed a pot on the stove to discover the handle's overheated unexpected - or a metal spatula can get hot there; a friend burned himself grabbing one of those.
