Then the Hydra reveal happened, and suddenly Grant Ward became fascinating to me. I didn't understand him before, and I still don't, but now I wanted to. Skye too, became a more authentic character to me, because her wide-eyed idealism made no sense to me before, given the upbringing she had, but now she had that vein of bitterness and mistrust, and I liked her a lot more.

I find this really interesting, because while I liked Ward from the get-go (unlike most of the rest of fandom) I did not start liking Skye and shipping Skyeward until the Hydra reveal, when, just like you, Skye suddenly seemed like a much more authentic and interesting person.

I hope this explains my position to your satisfaction.
