Reading Aloud

Mar 31, 2010 21:52

As you are no doubt painfully aware, in less than 28 days I will be a father. Yes, let us pause a moment for the sheer terror that sentence evokes.

In any case, as one prepares to be a father, naturally a bit of rumination on the duties therein ensues. One of the duties (and privileges) of fatherhood is reading aloud to one's offspring. Preferably while they are too young to eschew such practices. Inspired in part by this article from the NY times, I have been spending some time looking at amazon, and throwing books into a new wishlist created for this purpose. (which you may peruse if you are so inclined) Note that these are not necessarily traditional "kids" books, and some obvious gaps are covered by our current library of books (e.g. The Hobbit, or Treasure Island)

Some books on the list: Great Expectations, The Black Pearl, The Odyssey, and The Princess Bride.

So what books would you read to a child? What books did someone read to you? What books are just made to be read aloud? [Mothers may read aloud as well, so if you are, or could be one of those, please contribute as well.-ed]

I am curious to know.
