I always assumed that Beaver took Mac's clothes so she wouldn't have to see him like that. I think that she was the only real part of his life, and he didn't want her to have to find him completely broken. (Huh? Get it? Broken? Like the song? Great video, by the way. loveloveloved it.) But maybe I'm just a hopeless romantic. =] That's a good idea, though. Honestly. It's a new take on things.
