Over the weekend, midnightmelody decided to teach me to sing. It was interesting - the first realisation was that I tend to drift sharp and start on a new key with each new phrase. The second was that I apparently have a very clear idea of where a third is (two white notes away in non-technical terms), although am not so good at seconds or fourths. The third

Today I found out that men generally have at least three different voices, rather than the two I was rambling about the other day. So this is good.

In theory, yes. I haven't successfully burned one for a few years and have produced a fair few coasters.

Not sure - I wouldn't worry about it, if you're not used to using your voice (eg teaching, telesales or singing!) a certain amount of discomfort is not too bad. If you've strained your throat, we can work on breathing so that you're using the right bits of you to power the sound.

Would check with Ewt or Darcy if you want an authoritative opinion on throat-soreness.

Throat soreness can be from overuse when you aren't used to it, or due to tension. If it's due to tension then you need to learn to relax.

If you've been mostly trying to sing much higher than your vocal range actually allows, then tension is probably a large part of the answer.

Yeah, from my smidgen of experience with it (being in a choir with 13-year-old boys), basses singing tenor always sounds very bad. Even worse is the boy altos who are embarrassed and try to sing bass.

Fourths are easy - the first two notes to "Here Comes the Bride" are a fourth ("Here - comes"). Sixths are the real pain in the neck . . .

Almost all my intervals are Christmas carols, but for a sixth I tend to go for My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean. Fortunately I find that song painfully catchy.
