“Has anyone seen Arizona?” Addison asked to everyone and no-one
“No, well not for a while, she was pacing up and down like the families always do and then she just took off.”
“She LEFT?”
“Uh, I don’t know maybe she’s around somewhere”
“Hey, you, nurse, have you seen Dr.Robbins?”
“Bout an hour ago...thought she was heading to the chapel...haven’t seen her sense. How is Dr.Tor..”
But Addison was already on her way.
-------------------------------------------------
“I didn’t think I’d find you in here...I thought Callie told me you weren’t the religious type?”
The blonde looked pale, paler than her usual pale porcelain complexion, apart from the blotches of blood from several cuts and abrasions on her face. She looked dazed, ethereal even clearly not expecting anyone to intrude in her silent thoughts.
“Oh, Addison, it’s you” she looked at her for a long moment as if trying to process why the redhead was here and then in a rush and yet not she said “Oh” and after another long moment said lowly so lowly Addison had to strain to hear “If you’re here to tell me she’s gone then just don’t, please don’t, not yet, please” her voice trailing off so as to be barely audible.
“NO,no,Arizona...I didn’t mean to frighten you...she’s still in the OR...Derek’s done a craniotomy to relief some of the cranial swelling and Owen has stabilised her for now so they are working on her still. I came to see how you were holding up”
“The baby, is it...” silent tears began to fall down the white face intermingling with blood.
“The foetal heart beat is weaker than I’d like...but it wasn’t getting any weaker when I got kicked out”
“I wanted to do an emergency c-section but Derek and Fields over-ruled me”
“because it was too dangerous for Callie or because they thought it wasn’t necessary?”
“A bit of both...to be honest I’m glad the decisions been taken out of my hands...I’m not sure I could handle it if I was responsible for ...”
“Killing Callie?” Arizona said in a voice seemingly devoid of emotion. Addison just nodded.
“She would want you to save the baby...even if it meant...” she couldn’t say the words “You should know that if it comes down to it tonight that’s what she would want you to do.”
“Arizona, she has you listed as her medical power of attorney, did you know that?”
“No. Why would she do that?”
“I guess because she trusts you with her life and her baby’s life. Apparently she changed it a few weeks ago.”
Silence.
“Arizona, if we have to make that decision, you will have to guide us.”
“That the real reason you came looking for me?”
“That and I wanted to check up on you, see how you are holding up.”
“I proposed today, she is everything, without her there is nothing. I love her more than anything.”
“So,then,we save Callie?”
“She would want you to save the baby”
“But what do you want us to..”
“It doesn’t matter what I want, it only matters what she wants, and she would want you to save her baby”
“So we save the baby? Arizona are you sure?”
One nod and silence. She seemed even paler than before. Addison just took her hand and both stared silently ahead for what seemed like a long time.
“I’m not.”
“What?”
“Not religious, at all. I was baptized and all but we’re not a praying family”
“Oh...like me, I’m a wasp so it’s Christmas and Easter only.”
“She is...deep down she really believes in God, not so much in the Church but definitely in God.”
Silence again
Do you think you can make a deal?”
“Huh?”
“With God? With him or her? Does he do deals with people like me for people like her?”
“I don’t know” the redhead said “I know lots of people try, some may even succeed”
“Before you come in I was promising God that if she lives I will do anything that he asks of me, if they both live I will do absolutely anything. But then I was thinking how would I know what he wanted unless I started hearing voices in my head and thats never good! So instead I made a promise and a deal.”
“A promise?”
“I promised that if she and the baby live that I would walk away and leave her to be happy”
“Arizona that makes no sense at all..”
“It does, it makes total sense...because it’s the thing that would hurt me the most, it would shatter me, destroy me to leave them so I reckon that’s the biggest thing I have to offer in exchange for their lives. And I deserve it too because I put them here.”
“Arizona it was an accident! And speaking of which you really don’t look good I want to get you checked out again”
“Again? Look there’s nothing wrong with me, apart from the fact that I may have killed my girlfriend and our baby. I was driving, I wasn’t paying attention, I was too busy trying to stake my claim, make my claim bigger than Mark’s and I didn’t make her put her seatbelt back on and she wouldn’t have taken it off if I hadn’t thrown her phone away. So this is my fault...if she dies, if the baby dies...that’s why I made a deal as well, in case the promise isn’t enough.”
“What’s the deal? I’m almost afraid to ask?”
“If he lets them both live he can take me, it’s not much of a deal because if she dies I wouldn’t want to live anyway and if the baby dies I wouldn’t want to see the look on her face when she realises I killed her baby”
“Oh Arizona, honey...I’m pretty sure that the God your girl believes in doesn’t make deals like that...only good ones...and he or she wouldn’t want you to leave Callie either.
If I believe in anything it’s that love is a wonderful thing... maybe that’s what God is..LOVE and if so we both have to believe in that and in all our friends who are working on them right now. So come on, let’s get you checked out and then we can check up on you wife to be!
“Okay.”
As they stood up the last remaining colour drained from Arizona’s face and as she collapsed in Addison’s arms the redhead could only find the faintest pulse.
