Okay, guys. You know what's happening this weekend: Otakon.
For those of us who can't attend, we at least get to look forward to some license announcements.
So... What would you like to see licensed? And why? And how likely do you think it will be?
These questions and more under the cut.
Clannad: After Story
Why this series deserves to be licensed: Well, put simply, it’s the second half of a two-part story. Clannad is incomplete without this season. Besides, we all know Ushio is the real heart and soul of this series… She has to be allowed to make her tragic entrance!
How likely will an Otakon license announcement be?
4/5 - The first season sold much better than ADV expected, so I'd guess a license is probably in the very near future.
Eden of the East
Why this series deserves to be licensed: I don’t usually like thriller/suspense stories, but this show not only converted me - now I’m a believer. Plus, Production I.G is the shiznat, but everyone knows that already. There’s no way this show won’t get licensed someday.
How likely will an Otakon license announcement be?
3/5 - This one could go either way. It's had great publicity, but it's also incomplete without the movies. Bit of a risk?
Hanasakeru Seishonen
Why this series deserves to be licensed: Because it’s pretty and I probably won’t end up finishing it unless it comes out on DVD. Plus, any series based on a manga from over twenty years ago is noteworthy, even if for that reason alone. Did I mention it’s pretty?
How likely will an Otakon license announcement be?
2/5 - It's still ongoing, plus it's a reverse-harem shojo. We'll probably have to wait a bit longer for this one, methinks.
Hetalia
Why this series deserves to be licensed: IT IS INSANELY POPULAR. And, not surprisingly, is also one of the most requested titles up for licensure. (I didn’t realize “licensure” was a real word, but spell-check says it is, so there.) PASTAAA~
How likely will an Otakon license announcement be?
4/5 - Well, it was one of the most requested series up for license on Funimation's recent poll (judging from user comments on their blog).
K-ON!
Why this series deserves to be licensed: It… It… It’s just fun, okay? Good, old-fashioned, slice-of-life, MOE MOE KYUN fun. Plus, it’s got a great beat and you can really jive to it! I’d be curious to see a quality dubbing team tackle the songs.
How likely will an Otakon license announcement be?
2/5 - For some reason, there's been a lot of negative press surrounding moé shows lately. Not sure if the climate's right.
Kuroshitsuji
Why this series deserves to be licensed: Because it’s one of the best dark fantasy action series I’ve ever seen? And I’m still riding the high of getting the manga licensed, so I’ve become greedy for more. It’s definitely a series I would want in my collection.
How likely will an Otakon license announcement be?
4/5 - The show already has a huge built-in fanbase, plus the recent manga license will bring in a whole new crop of fans...
Pandora Hearts
Why this series deserves to be licensed: Never have I seen a show pull off so many Alice in Wonderland references so well! Not to mention that it has an almost flawless balance of humor and drama, as well as a stupendous leading cast. Best OT3 ever!
How likely will an Otakon license announcement be?
3/5 - Definitely has the right appeal for the American anime market, but since it's still ongoing, it could go either way.
Saiunkoku Monogatari S2
Why this series deserves to be licensed: This is one of the most intelligently written shojo series I’ve ever seen. And that’s saying a lot, because usually shojo just doesn’t manage to boat my float. I’d really love to see how this show progresses, but I’d rather not watch fansubs.
How likely will an Otakon license announcement be?
2/5 - As much as I want it and as well-received as the first season was, there just hasn't been much clamor for season two.
Toradora!
Why this series deserves to be licensed: Below all of the obvious tsundere stereotypes lurks some incredible character development and top-notch writing, brought to life with a truly sympathetic cast. This is, no lie, one of the best anime series I’ve ever watched.
How likely will an Otakon license announcement be?
4/5 - Again, a highly requested show on Funimation's blog. And one of the few shows that really appeals to both genders.
Zombie-Loan
Why this series deserves to be licensed: It looks cool and I never got around to watching it. The manga’s too long for me to afford, but was originally published in GFantasy, which is good enough for me! Plus, the premise just sounds really interesting. Zombies!
How likely will an Otakon license announcement be?
2/5 - I have heard nothing about this show other than a few mentions here on my flist. I'd like to see it someday...
In conclusion, I'd like for all of these series to be licensed. But I think that After Story, Hetalia, Kuroshitsuji and Toradora have the best chances. Then again, I've been wrong before! I probably would've listed both Antique and Junjou as 2/5, but look what happened at Anime Expo!
So, whattya think? Agree? Disagree? Have I forgotten anything?
