I didn't get this at all. I mean I thought Shondra had a legitimate point with her complaint about Bunheads. I also didn't think she was doing it to create some girl on girl crime either. I think Bunheads show runner was just trying to deflect and picked the wrong topic to do it with.
I totally agree that Palladino's comment was stupid and awful.
But I find it interesting that Racialicious decided to use the one image I've ever seen of only three of those four young ballerinas. Because the fourth one, the one that they left out, actually is a young woman of color. The actress is Brazilian and last name of the character, Sasha, is "Torres," indicating that this is not a case of a Caucasian Latina playing a WASP.
Not saying that Bunheads doesn't have a responsibility to be more diverse then it is, but making that point by pretending it's less diverse then it actually is seems like a a bad way to make the argument.
That actress is white. Furthermore if the character was intended to be a WoC, Palladino would've pointed that out. She didn't because she knew Rhimes correctly called her out.
That actress is Brazilian. I never said she wasn't white. In fact, I even described her as a Caucasian Latina, but she IS Brazilian. She was even born in Brazil. So there is absolutely a diversity of heritage that is being ignored in the criticism here. Furthermore, if the actress' heritage wasn't intended to be a part of the show, Palladino wouldn't have cast a Latina actress and then given her a traditionally Hispanic last name.
Also, I still find it somewhat troubling that Racialicious used a photo that included all three white American-born actresses but did not include Julia Goldani Telles, the Brazilian one. Who, it should be noted, is playing the most significant of the four young dancers; to the point where none of the other three actresses have ever appeared in a scene without her but she has appeared in several scenes alone with the show's lead. This article is literally the only place I have ever seen these three actresses without Telles.
Brazilian Canadian or Swedish, the actress is still white. Once again, the show did not cast a non white actress for the role. The show fails. End of discussion.
Furthermore thats like arguing Simon and River Tam are Asian because their last name is Asian in Firefly even though the actors portraying them are white.
Racialicious could've posted a pic of three of the actresses or all four. The show still fails regardless. And FYI I've seen that same pic in several places, not just Racialicious.
Bottom line. The show failed and quite frankly defending its racism is just proving my point.
