Shikamaru was right there, waiting for Yosuke to wake up from the post-auction coma. He remembered what it had been like for himself. He'd been disoriented, confused by the time he was missing... which had been over a week, in his case. He'd felt sick, and even though he hadn't admitted it, he'd felt pretty damn scared too. So he made sure Yosuke wouldn't be alone for that.
Now, as Yosuke began crying out, Shikamaru stood and hurried to his side. "Whoa, whoa!" He reached out to grab Yosuke's wrists before he hurt himself. "You're safe now! You're at home, Yosuke. It's just me and Nill here." As he tried to ease Yosuke's arms down, he glanced over his shoulder for their roommate. She'd want to see Yosuke too, he knew she would. But he couldn't keep his eyes off Yosuke, not for long. And he almost worried he might be squeezing Yosuke's arms too hard but it was strangely difficult to let go of his friend... who'd been dead, and now wasn't.
Even for someone like Nill, who repressed and repressed and smiled and kept moving forward in life (almost literally never looking back), the last few days had been... particularly bad, to say the least. Finding out Yosuke was dead, Shika having that outburst... even the thing with Belial a few weeks ago, for once it was getting to Nill more than she usually let on, and she couldn't help but be a bit... distracted by it all.
Up until Yosuke had woken up, she'd just been sitting near Shika, fidgeting uncomfortably and waiting in silence for him to wake up.
The fact that she was only really half there was only made obvious when Shika jumped up to join Yosuke and she didn't. Well, she did, but her reaction was delayed-- almost a full ten seconds had gone by after Shika had gotten up before Nill joined him their friends side, reaching out to tug on one of the teens arms as well.
It had taken him awhile as his panic had increased when his arms were grabbed, causing involuntary shaking as he tried harder to get away until he heard Shika's voice. The words didn't quite register with him, though. He sat back on his legs as he pressed his hand against his forehead, feeling the sweat that had broken out in his sudden hysterics. Yosuke turned slowly to look at both Nill and Shika. Had it all been a dream
( ... )
Shikamaru wasn't going to lie to Yosuke just to make him feel better. He let go reluctantly when Yosuke seemed to be calming down, his hands dropping to his sides while his shoulders sank into their usual hunch. That avoidant but-I-guess-I-have-to shrug.
"It wasn't a dream," he uttered soberly, head bowed. He would have liked to ask just how much of the incident Yosuke remembered, but that could come later, after the initial shock passed. For now, he'd tell what he knew. "You ran out of school before lunch on Thursday. Nill and I heard about it, so we went looking for you. All we found was a big goddamn hole in the ground, looked like a fight. Pretty much knew that was it for you, and you didn't come home. Borrowed some money and bought you when you showed up on the auction. It's Monday now. Welcome back to the land of the living."
