"Why? Should there be a prohibition on our curiosity simply because we're inebriated?" The phrase would have been perfectly reasonable, and deserving of a perfectly reasonable answer, had it not taken him three times as long to say it as he would have sober. As it was, it sounded nearly ridiculous.

Fon had quite a few questions of this sort to be asked, and Verde's terse reply to the first wasn't a deterrent in the least.

"You are never in the mood, my friend," Fon smiled, rolling his head languidly toward Verde. The movement felt strange, tingling, but numb, and Fon rather enjoyed it. "And I can easily see that your state of mind is as irritable as ever, and so you've either been lax with participation in our impromptu celebration, or you need to consume more than I do to sufficiently lubricate your thoughts."

Fon finished his laborious speech, slurred only slightly, with another smile and a sagely nod. And then another, because he found he rather liked that feeling, as well.
