Really, was it too much to ask for one week -- just one week, seven days, that wasn't even a very long time -- to go by without some pressing matter that required him to run his fucking legs off all over the city? (Well, yes it was, but that was neither here nor now.) Either way, Vargret had expected this to be the standard "kid goes crazy and tries to kill people" sort of schpiel -- had one just a month ago -- until the names started rolling in. Hanamura Yosuke, for one. And Shikamaru Nara, for another. That was when he'd started to worry ( ... )

"Nice to see you too, dad," Shikamaru muttered sarcastically without looking up. "No, no, don't worry. I'm fine." He snapped the cell phone shut and tossed it aside. Close enough still that he could grab it if it rang, but it wouldn't.

So, it was finally time for the interrogation. Vargret probably didn't have a whole lot of time for talking. And Shikamaru knew exactly what his dad needed to hear for this investigation. Hell, if Shikamaru felt like cooperating, Vargret could be out in less than five minutes with everything he needed.

Everything he needed to have Yosuke executed.

Shikamaru's fingers went to his temple, scratching underneath the bandages there. "Is... Is Yosuke okay?" he asked first. It was stalling, but not really. It was the most important question, and it wasn't a suspicious one. He'd been at Yosuke's house, after all.

The only answer Vargret gave at first was a long stare, one eyebrow raised, before giving a little scoff. "The kid threw you out a window and you still worry for me. Good to see you have morals, but you're also stupid." At least it was better than having an immoral fuckwad for a son, so Vargret only leaned back in the chair, running a hand through his hair. "Brat's fine. No one's allowed to see him yet, but he'll live."

That question over, he drummed his fingers against a knee, obviously impatient for the details. Once it had been confirmed that both kids would live, the next matter of priority was getting everything untangled before complications started rolling in. "I answered one of yours, your turn now. What the fuck happened."

And he was, of course, expecting a not-quite accurate answer. Could he blame the kid? Nah, attacked by his friend, it was expected that stuff would be fudged over, details omitted. Just meant that he'd have to grill a little harder to get the information he needed.

So they had him in custody. And he was alive. Shikamaru would have sighed in relief, but it hurt too much to take quite that much air into his lungs, so he just... slumped a little. It was the best news he could have expected.

Well, no, it would have been even better if the police somehow ended up with another suspect, but that was asking too much. Yosuke had probably gone on to do a lot of damage. Were people dead? He didn't really want to know.

Shikamaru had been planning some story about amnesia and how he couldn't remember what had happened, but at this point it seemed it would be worse to hold back. For one, "You think Yosuke threw me out a window?" Shikamaru turned an incredulous look to Vargret. "Didn't you see how far I flew? Yosuke couldn't do that. It wasn't him. But I don't even know how to begin explaining what it was."
