the evolution of a novel

When I was about fifteen or so, three influential things happened:

1) I discovered good fantasy.  I devoured Tolkien and Harry Potter and Earthsea in a gulp.
2) I read a lot of really crappy fantasy.

Many people think they'd like to write a novel. Many more start one (or more), and leave them languishing in a drawer or on a disc drive. You've joined a select group: those who actually finish one! Warmest congratulations - and may there be many more (books *and* congratulations) to come.

Well done - that is such an inspiring story! I had a similar experience to you in becoming very self-conscious in my teens and losing my writing self. I'm only jsut coming back to it now - much much later than you. Your flame was never extinguished. And that is very good advice - writing the book you want to read. Must remember that.
