No way--I loved that translation of Agamemnon. Seriously, I have three versions of the play and that one is the only one that doesn't make me cringe. And I know I have no Greek and therefore no authority, but I know good poetry from bad poetry, dammit... Oh, Nick Lowe, how you wound me. And Oedipus? I love that one toooo. When I studied OR last year for Classical Lit. we had to use the LOEB editions and it was so uninspiring comparitively. But if Nick Lowe says it, it must be true. I shall mourn in private.
See, the problem is that Fagles apparently gets a bit... creative with his translation (and makes up his own line numbers!?) which is the reason for Nick's wrath. But the pro to this con is that it's a readable, enjoyable translation. I used to have the Oxford World Classics Agamemnon and it left me completely cold. :( Oh well, By the end of next year, I might be able to read it in the original, and then I shall not have to bother with these pitiful little translations. Hah.
